I was watching this video regarding the Thermostat installation in a Gen II. I noticed he drilled holes in the thermostat. As anyone seen or done this before? Is it a common practice? I'm switching my Gen III thermostat with a 170.

Not seen this "hole drilling before".

Gen III gasket, etc. is different.

T-stat in video does not appear to be Gen III OE Cal Therm type.

I have a Cal Therm OE type 170 T-stat in my Gen III and it works very well.

Some engines require a two stage thermostat - one that has one medium size valve and one small valve as opposed to the common single large valve type. They cure a problem common to Toyota 22re motors (I went threw it with mine, that's how I found out),but Toyota gets $30 for it.Drilling one or two 1/8" holes in a standard $5 single stage thermostat is the cheap way out and works fine.Saving money = owning a viper :2tu::headbang:.

Well, so if I bought a 170 degree thermostat I could drill 1/8 in the thermostat sides for my gen III to reduce the hose from crimping as much and will help the cooling of the mortor
