I'm curious if any viper owners who put vinyl stripes on their car had a clearcoat put on over the stripes? Reason is, Im in the market for a red 97 GTS and Im thinking of putting white stripes on it as the first mod. pics/info is appreciated!

I would not clear over Vinyl. You are better off with just the Vinyl or having the stripes painted. I had Vinyl stripes put on my red 94 rt/10 and they were not perfect. I just had stripes painted on my red 98 GTS and they are perfect.

I wouldn't clear over the vinyl stripes. Mainly in case you ever want to remove them. I think most have the stripes installed right over the factory clear.

No reason at all to clear over the stripes, what would the purpose be? They are pretty durable as is, and it's nice to be able to rip them off and go nekkid, or another color.

Phil - How about a dark navy blue?

I did the Vinyl myself and it was $125, to have the vinyl done professionally it would of been around $500. It is hard to get the Vinyl done perfect even if a professional does it and most don’t do the NACA duct. Rock chips don’t look good with vinyl either. Paint can range from $1,000 to $3,000. They painted my stripes and re-cleared the entire car.

I preferred the look of going around the duct, which is why I did it that way. Most agree it highlights it. It's not difficult to do. Running it through the license plate area takes some skillz to do right. If your worried about perfect, it ain't going to happen. Even factory stripes have imperfections.

I heard the bumpers are tough to vinyl as well. It probably is worth it to have it professionally painted. Anyone painted the stripes without clearcoating the car... I wonder if you can tell the difference?

It really does, but why not stripe through the naca duct?

Personal preference. I like how it highlights the duct instead of hiding it.

The silver/graphite above is mine. I too chose to apply it myself for $125 instead of paying $500 for a professional to do it. With patience you can do a REALLY good job yourself. I took mine back to the vinyl supplier/installer after I did it myself and he said he couldn't have done it better himself. Other than knowing a few tricks, there's no magic to it.

Definitely NO CLEAR. The beauty of vinyl is you can change in on a whim. When rocks chip it up or you're tired of it, just peel it off and apply new. But this stuff lasts many years and takes a quite a bit of work to get off. Me saying "just peel it off" may be an understatement :smirk: .

As for the NACA duct and rear license plate area..... it's personal preference. They are both VERY difficult to do in vinyl and I personally like the stripes going around the NACA duct. It really accentuates the opening. I made it a point to NOT piece-meal my stripes like the previous owner had done on my car. At every difficult spot (bumpers primarily) they had cut and used two pieces. So when you look close, there were seams in the vinyl in many spots. So as said above, the radius around the bumpers are the worst pieces. I think it looks pretty nice NOT going through the lic. plate. Just my $.02

I personally think that going around the naca intake looks better like Trainville did it, plus it removes an area that could come out looking pretty bad if not done well in vinyl.

Plum, let's just pick out a purple and try it! I really liked the thread a month or so ago where someone showed the new '08 purple color with silver stripes. That will look SO good! I think a deep metallic purple would look awesome on silver..........please don't go with Lavender....
