Don't do much track work in the Mamba perhaps 3 of four a year but these are for charity and often involve 20-40 laps, with not much of a break.

None of the circuits have many long sweeping bends (UK is a small country)the questions are:-

Do you actually see a loss in oil pressure through the bends??

Is it a left hand bend problem or right

Does the reduction in pressure cause the big end bearing (rods)failure talked about so often on the board by track cars.

Should I use a comp coupe oil pan?? And if so what is a good price??

I know there have been a few failures due to starvation at Willow Springs from the long left-hander. It was recommended to me that anyone who hits the course aggressively should have the comp coupe oil pan.

I'm getting one next month.

I blew my engine on a small, tight track, with no long sweeping bends.
If you track your car, you need to address the oiling issues. The comp coupe oil pan will help, but isn't always enough.

As for whether loss of oil pressure causes rod failure, the answer is yes, and the results aren't pretty:

Mopar makes a Race Oil Pickup Part Number P4510174 that solves these problems on the race track.

"Solves" is a bit of an overstatement. "Helps" is probably more accurate.

I had the comp coupe oil pan with the swiging oil pickup installed on my car when it blew.

Baffled comp coupe pan with the swinging pick-up and a 3 quart accusump is probably as good as you can get without going the full dry sump route. (And nobody makes a dry sump that will allow you to keep your air conditioner.)

I called my distruibtor and he says there are on back order with no due date. They list for $1900.00. You might try to get your dealer to do a dealer search.

Is this part you are referring work with the stock pan or only with the comp coupe pan? What is the cost?

This is concerning to me since I do track my car from time to time at Pocono which has multiple, high-G, lefthand sweepers.

Thanks

Hi Paul,

Yes, as Kai says above, the SRT-10 has some serious oiling issues on the race track for a car with a "race car" reputation.

At almost every Viper Days event I've attended, someone in a SRT-10 has lost an engine due to oil starvation.

I am currently running about the same set up as Kai with a few added goodies, a 3 quart Accusump, comp coupe oil pan with swing arm pick up, modded windage tray and a 2 quart oil cooler with a reworked oil pump pressure relief system (contact Kevin at Exotic Engine for the latter).

Try Woodhouse Dodge for the comp coupe oil pan.

Good luck,

Dan :usa:

My solution so far is to overfill the crankcase by about 1 qt. So far so good on the track. I do watch the gauge closely on the worst left hander (turn 5 & 6 at Gingerman). The only time I noticed any loss of pressure was when getting very aggressive. I was 1 qt low at that time due to loss of oil (out of the fill cap). That was the reason I started to overfill.

Crossing my fingers.

Thanks guys one has to wonder if by the time the gauge registers the loss of pressure at the sender the damage is already done to the motor.

Most of the bends we have on the track I use are right handers with one really neat left then right chicane.

Great idea on the overfill do try to do a pint for the road as it does seem to improve the oil pressure and reduce the oil temp.

Not sure on such a large motor as the Viper if the overfill really matters??

Not sure about the guage delay/reaction. But if oil pressure is already low, and I assume the OP guage is damped, your oil pressure could be below what it registers at the time.
Here is the part Fat Albert offers...are there any other systems for dry sump - other than failure to oil starvation:
Catalog No: t_DCP_1089.

Is this a SRT-10 Engine problem only? Or does it happen in earlier models? If not what changed to make it a problem in SRT-10 Engines?

Thanks,
Dan

It seems to happen in all GTS and SRT-10s.

I believe this fits a stock pan but I do not know for sure. The Mopar catalog says it is a modified version of the compitition coupe oil pickup. They are on back order with no due date
