Trading a 94 RT10 for 96 GTS need help with what is fair

Hey all,

So I've been thinking about possibly trading my beautiful 94 RT for a 96 GTS and just wondered what would be fair price difference wise? My car is perfect condition with around 15K miles and is an in class show winner. I'm looking at 2 different 96's at dealers one with 40K miles and one with 15K miles. They both ask me "what am I thinking" and honestly I don't have any idea so thought I'd ask my fellow Viper owners for advice on what would be fair. I realize a dealer has to make money so maybe I can just get "value" of both the cars. I checked NADA (I know that is not the most accurate) and it had average retail at like 29K for mine and 32K for a GTS. I have no idea how close those figures reflect the actual market. As much as you consider to be a fair 'trade-in' price for your car I think you're going to be very disappointed. My best guess for a trade-in offer from a dealer for your car will probably be around $18k - $23k (I'm not implying that's all your car is worth but on a trade you may take a big loss). NADA doesn't reflect the actual selling price of '96 B/W GTS Coupes. You can expect to pay an additional $15K - $25K for a '96 B/W on a trade depending on the miles/condition.

I know -- sounds crazy but be forewarned. I wish you the best of luck!

Wow that is a big shock. Hmm, so how about just retail value to retail value then? What is a pristine Gen 1 worth, and a similar 96 GTS worth today? Does mileage affect the GTS a lot? The reason I ask is the one with 40K miles they are asking as much as the one with 15K which seems odd to me.

I should state, I in know way want to get rid of the car, I love it, I was only thinking it might be time to trade to the 96, obviously plus cash, but no way I'd give as much as what you stated, I'd just buy the GTS outright.

I can't really offer you a specific retail price for a GEN I Viper - Perhaps for a low mile Gen I around $25K - $32K. Too many are for sale with 'asking prices' so it's hard to say what they are actually being sold for.

Mileage does affect the GTS prices although the prices for GEN II Vipers are all over the place, and the B/W '96 command a premium price especially with low miles. (if you do your homework you'll see more clearly where the market balance falls in place).

Either way, your car is beautiful!

Doug is spot on(as usual.... ) Sell yours for about $30K, then go get the GTS you want. There are some really good deals out there. Just be educated and get the car fully checked out. Put it on a lift and look at the frame for damage, engine/trans/rear for leaks. Basic stuff.

Thanks for the replies guys. Guess I just liked the "ease" of trading on a 96 but looks like I'll get it up the butt if I do that so I'll have to reconsider that option.

You probably won't like the deal that a car dealer wants to make, but there's no harm in making a reasonable offer. The worst that can happen is they'll turn you down... or laugh at you. Factor in that you'll save a few bucks on sales tax if trading in. Its worth a shot, just don't expect a steal.
