Tranny whinning, Help!

Ok all you experts out there. Over the last week my tranny has started to make some noise.
Sometimes louder than others but last night at 70mph in 6th gear ~1500 RPM, the tranny was louder than the exhaust.

The noise is a speed related whirring that does not change with clutch in or out.

It seems to increase with heat, meaning starting of cold that it takes 15 to 20 miles for the noise to really be noticable.

it is a 96 GTS with original clutch and 55K miles. Yeah, I drive it!

Any clues?

I changed it last summer about 12K miles ago, but that would be the cheapest solution.
In the next week or two, I plan to drop the tranny to fix an oil leak and replace the clutch, slave cylinder, pilot and throw out bearings I might as well change the fluid too.

Rear end, it will sound like its coming from the trans.

Unless you tell me that the noise is only in 1 gear.

What type tranny fluid did you use last time? Diff.?

Just out of curiousity, is this also the case with a 4WD vehicle?

For the Diff I used the mopar fluid and the limited slip additive. But you guys got me thinking that I need to check my mileage again. There is at least 12K miles on the current fluid. So it probably won't hurt to change the diff fluid.

For the tranny I used Valvoline Synthetic ATF+4

The noise is rear wheel speed dependant.

Sounds more and more like a fluid change is order.

If its that loud I highly doubt its the fluid. At this point you probably have many damaged/missing teeth on the rear end.

Just went through this several times with another member on this board, the first time it started acting up it was the sound like yours. We all thought it was trans as well until the rear end gear finally broke.

1 Rebuild stock gearing
2 Rebuild 3.33 gears
3 New diff

Just drive it till it drops, then you will really know what's going on.

The rear diff gets very little cooling on these cars, 12K and the fluid is usually shot.

This is all a mater of personal preference, for me stock gearing is best other prefer to spin tires every time they hit the gas.

Doubt there is any need for a new diff, my suggestion would be to take the rear end out and send it or take it to someone that rebuilds them. Cost should be cheap if you just want to stick with the factory limited slip. Should not cost more than 6-700 to replace and repair the broken parts.

Sorry dont know the answer to that question. There are many more moving parts on these, like transfer case.

(maybe with 3.55's) get a new diff with gear already installed(from trusted source) with core exchange - like getting a diff (<--- get it ) car instead of just a repaired same car (not that there is anything wrong with the current car) for just a little extra coin

Ratical 2,

When you drop your tranny here a few pointers:
drain fluid first
slave cylinder replacement if high mileage & bleed properly
replace throw-out bearing ( use upgrade version )
new dana strap kit w/bolts
inspect flywheel for excess wear ( most likely need to replace )
use quality flywheel & clutch ( good time to upgrade / lighten up )
new flywheel bolts
Mopar synthetic oil ( minimum )
rear diff ( 3.54 / 3.73 ) use mopar additive - anti chatter

The Gen 2 really responds well to lighter flywheel & 3.54 plus gear ratials. These were the basics back in the days that my crew & I were doing.

Heres a good set up:
3.54 or 3.73
billet flywheel / sportsman clutch
headers

not much will walk from you then!
