My o4 seems to have a high pitch in 5th and 6th gear can't hear it with the top down but, it is very prevelant when it is up. Anyone have this issue ? normal?

Change the fluid in it and see if the noise changes. If not it's coming out to get re-built! If you still warranty, then go to your Dealer and get a new one.

Going to take it to the dealer here tomorrow. The Viper tech is a pretty good mechanic. My warranty is up but, I have and extended warranty so I hope that works. Thanks

Mike you might be right on this I have a fairly new unitrack 3:55 and I am now thinking this may be where the problem is. Who did yours and how much?
I ordered a exchange unit from Jon B. He sent me the rear end , already built with 3:33's and Quiafe. Quick swap of rear end and sent him my old unit back as a core. At the time it was about $2900, plus fluids and shipping.
Hi. Before you go to the expense of changing out your rear end ( a funny image ), you might want to try changing the differential fliud and adding additive PN# 4318060AB. If it doesn't work, you can then move to the next step.

Changing the oil is not going to eliminate gear whine from the differential.

not trying to compete...just trying to keep it simple.
Some poor guy reads that changing the shifter is a 40 minute job and think wow that must be easy...gets half way into it and finds out he can't finish the job becuase it turned out to be more difficult than it was made out to be.
also, why waste 50 bucks worth of oil and an afternoon changing it for nothing? I've tried it myself before, even gone to thicker oil to try to reduce noise....it doesn't.

I respect Illsmoq's experience. There is nothing personal about my post. My post indicated that an additive must also be used. A change of differential fluid with the use of that additive has been effective in some cases, including at least two '08 differentials that I am aware of, in eliminating differential whine. This site is about all of us sharing data that we are aware of with VCA members. Illsmoq is not wrong and neither am I. Not all differential wine problems are going to be solved by my suggestion - just some. As to wasting time, it depends on how one values his or her own time. I prefer to let my Viper tech do the work on most items. His time is seven times less expensive than me using my own time. And since I have only one life to spend, I prefer to spend it on things other than fluid changes. But, with that said, I know that many people like to do their own fluid changes and I certainly respect that. As for some "poor guy" ....., if he or she can read, they will see that I am referring to an experienced Viper tech with the proper tools doing the job. As for experience, I built my first go cart from scratch when I was eleven, a racing go cart when I was thirteen, modified various cars from the age of 16 forward. I was a mechanic when I was a kid. Admittedly, these old hands do not do as much as they used to do but I try to keep my brain in the game.

The additive you are refering too is called "friction modifier", it allows the limited slip unit to slip smoother...with out it you will have some bad sounds coming out of the differential. Friction modifier will have no effect on gear wine.

WHINE is what gears do when you don't use the correct friction modifier.
I mean, do you serve gear wine with windshield bolts and blinker bearings?

One person's "bad sounds" are another person's whine. At least two '08's have had whine like sounds when cornering in a garage or a parking lot at low speeds. A diff fluid change with the additive solved the problem. Of course, as you are saying, if the gears are shot, they are shot.

There it is. You take in a car and tell the tech it makes a whine sound ...the tech will be looking for a whine sound. The best bet is to try to describe the sound....you may look funny trying to reproduce the sound but at least you and the tech will be on or close to the same page.
a diff that needs friction modifier is going to "groan and clank clank clunk" during low speed turns.

Nope. Not every time. At least one that heard, whined. But after reconsidering the facts, I agree with you that the problem decribed here, if it is the diff, and because it is not at low speed while turning is most likely crapped out gears. How good is the Unitrax (Sp?) I heard that they tend to be noisy. If so, could the noise level be normal?

Well went to the dealer and we went for a test drive. Carrier issue. Ordering new parts for the rebuild. We drained the oil and added new but like most said here no change. The oil was clean and expensive. I think the Quafie is the way to go. Since its still under warranty I am just going to get it fixed.

I am going to drive it Sunday to an event the Viper Mechanic said it should be fine. I do hope he's right. I really don't want to drive home in a tow truck.

Well it ended up a broken carrier no posi traction. replaced thrusday just out this weekend breaking it in.
