Best year is in what?
96-99 Forged internals
01-02 Equipped with abs
96-98 17" wheels
99-02 18" wheels
The rest of the differences are trim and colors mainly

Yeah. It just depends on what you want... I wanted Blue with white stripes and those were only made in 96-97 so ABS and such weren't really an option(other than aftermarket upgrading).

Explaining Viper things to you
I guess I am just a purist...yours is no sacrafice at all if you don't plan to add a SC, which is a good plan!

Given that it seems like half of the engine technical posts you see here are S/C issues, I'm starting to agree with that.

Maybe when I get the Juli clone done, I'll have my own personal tuner and she can keep the S/C issues to a dull roar while I'm out making the bacon.

Start your search with the 01s for the ABS reason. I sold my 96, because when I wanted to stop, I wanted to stop. I now have an 06, and the brakes are world class.

Brakes can be upgraded. Dave's kit puts SRT brakes on a pre ABS Viper, or for much less Tom's brake kit make a huge improvement. Buy a forged motor year, upgrade the brakes with the savings on an older year and away you go.

Or upgrade the newer "creampuff" with forged pistons. Since you're buying used, you can just look until you find the 'perfect one'. Mine's an 01 with VR1 wheels, Roe, Cam, pistons, exhaust, upgraded speakers, cup holders, 2 pce lighweight brake rotors, EBS pads, etc. 720rwhp and a 100hp Nitrous System that I only use for car shows.

Totally objective advice...considering the number of Vipers that get totalled, buy one with some handling upgrades, esp if you are an experienced or hard driver. You will get more for your money if someone else has already spent the money on the parts and done the work. Yes, brakes can be upgraded. If you are not that experienced, go with ABS. If you want to drag, get forged pistons and a SC. If you are a 'polisher', then just pick the one in the color you like. Simple. But definately get a GTS. ;)

Dave's does put 14 inch SRT brake calipers on pre ABS Vipers, however it is still not an ABS system.
Get an 01 or02 GTS
