Viper Myth Thread. What have you heard?

I've been asked;"What kind of corvette is that ?" I said, "It's a special Order with 2 extra Cylinders"

Yeah...I had one guy say something like "I've never seen one with body cladding like that." I should have asked him what exactly he thought it was, but I was too busy pumping gas at the time. Probably thought it was a Vette though.

Myth that Gen 1 and Gen 2 Vipers are very expensive cars. New minivans cost more!
I'm fine with that myth. It evens out once you factor in the cost of gas and tires.

I was asked if my GTS had the 12 cylinder in it when I said it was a 10 cylinder his reply way I bought the cheap model.

I've had a lot of these happen too. Especially the V12 comment.
The "Is that a Corvette" thing is always worth a painful smile. I even tried to fix it once by parking beside a friend's Corvette at a car show, and it made it worse! I heard one guy say: Oh, here's a couple more Corvettes.
Another big one is: "I saw that car when it was wrecked, I can't believe someone fixed it."
And the more unfortunate (because it's true for some people who I know) stories of someone knowing someone who died in one.

Heard the same thing from a Texas trooper when he pulled me over for a discussion on the way to VOI. The guy had honestly never seen a GTS before!

#1 myth I get is the dumb reasoning of, "well if you can afford a Viper why can't you afford ___Insert other expensive thing here___?" Owning one nice thing does not mean I have unlimited monies.
Another myth is that it gets insanely horrible gas mileage. In 6000 miles of ownership, I've never seen it dip below 15ish and yes, I do give it the beans often, including half day spirited 'cruises' with car clubs. Have yet to track it though

One I've just heard recently...the C7 Corvette will be faster around a road course than a Gen V Viper.

Someone (maybe on here) once said there was a motor oil commercial that incorrectly attributed the Viper as having a V-12, and that's where the myth started?
My ACR had a lot of comments like,
"Where'd you get that body kit? What'd it look like stock?" (it came like this from the factory...)
"Looks like you must give it hell the way them tires don't have any tread!" (MPSCs don't have tread on the outer edge...)
"What's that run, about 220 mph? 230?" (Nope, not even close, but thanks!)
"What's that cost, about $200k?" (Nope, not even close on that either!)

This is one of the most annoying and obnoxious things people have said to me so far as well. That's why I have chosen to largely keep the fact that I own a Viper to myself among my friends and family and have not posted even one picture or comment about it on Facebook. Some of the few people I'm not close with who unintentionally found out that i have a Viper are are now acting as if I OWE them a ride in the car and are making me feel like I'm some free personal amusement park ride. If I didn't offer you a ride in the car (which is rare that I don't), then don't act like I owe you one. Haha!
By far the most annoying question I have gotten since buying the car that literally EVERYONE asks me when they first see the car or find out I have it is, "How fast have you gotten it up to yet?!" like all I do in the car is drive down the highway recklessly at over 150 mph just because I have a Viper.
I'm with you Hoboken, I try to not talk about my car, even when dating girls I would pick them up in my crappy Dakota that I had. Friends will always talk about it, we go out to eat and they will tell the waitress to ask for a ride in my Viper or something strange... ends up getting real awkward.

I get the "man that thing eats gas like crazy", I tell them that it's not any worse than their big underpowered minivans or suv's. These cars are quite decent if you keep your foot out and drive normally.

Absolutely. 2010 ACR. 6th gear, 60-65 mph, it'll do mid 20s all day.

Hmm, and here I figured the ACR would get worse mileage from a different (assumed higher) coefficient of drag.

Wish that was true for my 2008 vert..... I seem to get less than 15 mph cruising in 6th on the highway at 60-65 as my car has a 3.73 gearing and high flow cats. Is that normal? I swear I have a hole in the gas tank because it really goes down THAT fast!!!

I'm no engineer, but as far as I can tell, at those speeds, the drag difference isn't significant. Over 100 mph, sure.

There is some truth to that. IIRC the ACR generates something like 10x more downforce at 150... So, I assumed the noticeably worse. In a vehicle dynamics class I had, between rolling resistance and wind resistance they say the optimum speed is about 45, but its not much worse up to 62 mph. So, yeah, at 60-65 there might not be a big difference.
Did you mean 15mpg? Man that stinks. Could it be due to switching to 3.73's?
