hello, we are trying to figure out the best solution for sounds in the viper. we are getting the stock cd player for them, (in my wife's case she already has hers.) after reading some bad reviews about getting the RB-1 nav unit we would like to hear from some of you who have gone the aftermarket route and listen to some suggestions. ie. cd changers, head units, speakers. any info will be helpful.
thanks.:)

Not sure what you have heard about the RB-1 but I have it and extremely happy with it. After market stereos are nice but look out of place in the Viper. the RB-1 give the dash a much imrpoved look and sounds better than the stock stereo. The NAV works fine.

I changed to a Bluetooth, MP3, ipod, AVVI(?), CD Premier head unit. New laws are making it illegal to use the phone while driving so this unit is a good choice. Answers the phone automatically and conversations are like the person is sitting in the passenger seat. No need to touch the phone as the stereo will even work it in the trunk.

The stock speakers are crap and I replaced them with Hertz. Double the sound quality and much better separation with the electronic crossover unit in the doors. The stock stereo is OK for sound.

Clarion makes a great buetooth with an LCD screen.

The Nav systems I looked at were all over $1000 so I decided to go with a remote nav (so that I can use it in different cars ($370).

My 98 GTS had Polk speakers and they sounded awesome! I installed a DVD (rewired it to work for the passenger while driving/illegal/ but she never turned it on).

Hertz HSK 165 was the door set (tweeters, crossovers and door speakers). The sound is fabulous. The tweeters take a little work as I had to grind out the stock mounting cup and glue the tweeters to them. They look stock even though they're probably about 25% larger cones.

Hertz HU 165 was the Low frequency rear speakers. They're slightly larger than factory so they sit on the door panel and the rears fit behind the covers nicely.

No need for other subs or amps, unless you're going for more than listening enjoyment. I doubt if these would win any competitions, but I don't have anything I need to adjust with a decimeter or frequency detector. Just instal with stock wiring and good tunes. Now the floor and the panels rumble with the bass even at half volume.

Price was really good with the cost being <$500.

This is for the Second Generation GTS only.

Here's a pic (back of doorpanel) showing location of active crossover I screwed and epoxied inside the door. Wiring required is solderless and simple. I soldered the stock harness plug to lengthen it to reach the crossover.

I changed out the door speakers with MB Quart and changed the Sub to JL Audio. Changed the amps out etc. Added the Pioneer with XM Raio and my Ipod hooks up in the console in the middle. Plenty of power and sounds great.

Shandon, what model JL did you use in the center console enclosure? That's a little plastic bandpass box if I'm not mistaken. I was trying to get a JL to fit but the depth of the speaker was too much for the box. What model did you use? How many watts are you driving everything with?

Smoke her is the link JL Audio Products: Subwoofers / 6W0
It fits fine with a little work. First you need to remove most of the port inside the sub box (pretty easy), Second you will want to seal the port so you can put some power to this sub. It's only rated to 75 watts I think but I am pushing at least 250 to it. I read several reviews where people were putting 300watts rms to this thing sealed. Overal power in the car is around 900 watts. It's plenty even with the improved sound and decible level of the headers on the car.

Did you replace the factory amps? If so what did you use, how many and where did you mount them?

Yea I used a Sony 2 chanel mounted in the trunk for the front two speakers and used a mono fosgate amp under the passanger seat for the sub. I let the new radio's amp run the two rear crapy speakers since they don't need much power.

BTW: For anyone interested in doing the Polk door speaker upgrade, the DB650's are discontinued. The new design (with the correct mounting holes for the Viper) is the Polk DB651S. Don't for get the "S" at the end or you will be unhappy.
