...the Viper on a trip that left Sedona and went up Oak Creek Canyon road to near Flagstaff and then back down through Mormon Lake. Lutz decided he would drive VM02 and I rode with him since the control and calibration was fresh off the dyno and was far from done. None the less, Lutz's was so impressed with how the car ran he decided he should drive it on the press loop with the writers and the other vehicles. We were leading the pack as the rest tried to keep up, I was riding shotgun with my instrumentation making adjustments as we went. Once we were on a nice straight section of road on the east side of Mormon Lake (Route 487) Lutz pushed it up over 125 mph. Of course, a local Mormon Lake Sheriff was right there and pulled us over. As the Sheriff walked up to the car Lutz started, "Hi, I'm Bob Lutz President of Chrysler, how do you like my new sports car". The Sheriff rolled his eyes and said "do you know how fast you were going?" Lutz countered, "It felt so good I might have gotten a little carried away". After a little more small talk the Sheriff told him to leave the area and take it easy - please! As I recall, the Sheriff had us at 127 mph in a 55. He was obviously pretty impressed and could have impounded the car and arrested us if he had wanted to. He was definitely a good sport about it but was also very serious that he wanted us out of his district!
