Was there a problem with the 1994 power steering?

My steering is making a funny noise when I turn it to the right. Note: I'm not completely turning all the way. Maybe 50%. Doesn't always do it. Fluids are full.

Adam,

HOw many times do I have to tell you about questions like these???

Simple fix... DON'T TURN RIGHT ANYMORE!!!! Make a large left hand sweeping turn. If that doesn't work, try what Antonio said, check for hidden gerbils in trunk, glove box, power steering pump.

On a serious note. The pumps are known to go bad.Mine in my '94 did.

ab,

Not sure what the sound is you are hearing, but Ted May (my Viper tech.-stud) said I should get a power steering cooler for my GenI '94. He said getting one of those is a lot cheaper than replacing the power steering pump which will often burn up because of all the heat (power steering fluid getting too hot, etc.).

Good luck-

Rollo

Hmm..Maybe a cooler would be a good idea. How do you drain the old fluid from the rack and pump? What should I use? I bet my fluids are burnt...I doubt it has been ever changed either too..please give some advice. Thanks guys!

You are getting rusty! GenI never had P/S coolers; I burned two systems to the ground at track events. The cooler needs to be relocated to the front fascia and should be a good quality Mocal or similar, at least 11" x 3.5" x 1". That and good synthetic fluid and you should have no problems.

As far as the right v left turn noise, that's truly strange. You did not indicate whether it was a whine or another sound. I would also check for interference with suspension or body work as the wheels are turned left to right. If it is a whine, but the steering feels OK, then change fluid, add a cooler and don't sweat it. Drown out the noise with sprited application of throttle.
