Can you tell me what you think is the best overall gear ratio for daily driving. I was thinking about maybe 373's or do you think they are a little to low for everyday. The car is a stock RT/10 if that matters & not planning on any Long road trips.

The 3.55's in my 06 Coupe work beautifully ... 6th is even usable at speeds less than 90 :drive:

So 3.73's are a little to low, is there much difference between the 3.55 or 3.45's (I kind of thought the 3.55's might be the overall favorite) does it change gas mileage much. I also know it has alot to do with the right foot too & who sells them. Thanks Guys

I have 3.55s. I had them on the car before I went s/c. They are perfect for n/a.
I've been in a GTS with 3.73s and a s/c and its way too low. Absolutely no 1st gear and the shifting seems way too short between gears.
I would say you will lose about 1-2mpg on the highway with 3.55s. But the feel feel of extra throttle response is worth it.

What he said + ..i put 3:55's in my RT/10 and it is a whole new animal! I enjoy driving it much more now and it just feels good.Pulls out easily in first or second if you like. And sixth is usable now over 70.

What year RT/10? I had 3.73's in my old 1996 and they were great! Still got 22 MPG too! I think the 3.73s in a relatively stock Gen I are perfect :2tu:

What do you intend to do with the car during your "daily drives". Gear choice depends on use.

I installed 355's in my gen3 about 200 miles ago and call me weird (others do) but I really don't like them. JonB said I'll have to relearn how to drive my car so maybe I haven't given it enough time. The biggest observation is that I seem to be shifting much more frequently. Yes 5th and 6th are now usable and I find my cruising rpm's way down from before. I would suggest anyone considering it to test drive a friends with 355's if possible before making the move (it's a costly mod which you may not like). I always thought 307's were a joke but now I'm not sure. As far as 373's depending on your tire diameter on a gen2 you may end up with too much gear. Others (many) will disagree with my opinion but that's why they make them.IMHO

Good luck whatever you decide. Call Jon for the gear set. He was very good to me even when I first received the 373's and changed my mind. It cost me shipping back to Unitrax so make sure before you jump.:)

Matt,

You might want to check out the link below for information on transmission gear and speeds for different final gears. I made this for Gen III, but if not mistaken, they are identical to the Gen II transmission gear ratios.

Gears vs speeds vs RPM ... warning, actual math included.

Just scroll down through the thread until you find you gear of choice. I included 3.08s, 3.33s, 3.55s, 3.73s, and 4.10s.

Enjoy.

THE YEAR MATTERS !!

3:73 is a great gear for Gen 1, 400HP.

3:55 or 3:73 on Gen 2, the wheelspin is greatr on 3:73

Imminently SEARCHABLE topic!

This is something that I've been thinking about as I'm about to fit a Paxton to my car. It already has in the order of 550bhp NA (flywheel) and I guess I'm hoping for 650bhp post S/C. Currently have 3.54 gears. What would be best to limit wheel spin in 1st - 3rd gears?

Sticky tires are going to limit wheel spin the best.

Of course the stock 3.07s are going to give you the better traction of all the gears, but which is going to be more fun ;)

I think 3.55s would be great for a Paxton car since you aren't as worried about the instant torque from say a Roe s/c. My Roe and 3.55s makes 1st and 2nd useless. I would like to go back to 3.07s or 3.33s. I have taller tires than stock which puts my final ratio around 3.45, but traction is still an issue in lower gears.

If you really use the Paxton power, the more it sticks, the more stress on the differential and half shafts. This is one of the reasons I run the 3.07. You need to consider the totality of the situation and mod accordingly. Depending on use, changing one component may require a change in others to maintain reliability.
