Anyone use the portable Garmin units that can be transferred from car to car? Their new 2620 model looks pretty cool.

I just had the Kenwood Excelon KVT815 DVD added, and put the Kenwood KNA DV3100 with the optional voice command that just plain "rocks".
Complete Navigation/GPS, DVD/CD/Sirius radio compatible....direct plug in and the navigation fits under the passenger seat making the install very sharp.
Just my .02 cents

Yes. The portable Garmin is great. You can move it among cars and hide it in the glove box when not in use. (well, maybe not the Viper glove box) I highly recommend it. In fact, I put it in my buddy's flatbed when we drove from NY to SC to pick up my Viper.

I will say that the screen it great, but not nearly as big as the full deck units or the stand alone screens. However, if you use a GPS you are really listening to the voice commands, not following by screen. Oh yeah, it has points of interest, ATM, gas, etc.

When you buy it, you get one 'area' free. Say NY, NJ, CT. The country is broken into about 8 sections. Additional sections are extra, or a package deal gets you everything. Also, you may want to upgrade the memory unit to hold more space without reprogramming. To set it up right, you might want to consider $400 in extras. Still a good deal though.

UPDATE:

Now "This updated product (with access to all regions at no extra charge) is included with the purchase of a Garmin® StreetPilot® III Deluxe, StreetPilot 2610 and StreetPilot 2650" So I guess the full map is included now.

I have the Navman ICN 630 ( http://www.navman.com/land/products/icn630/index.html ) , and love it. I has a great suction cup mount for the windshield that holds it well, and the screen is very bright. I move it between our cars and trucks (and take on trips for the rental car). It comes with a small 64MB card to hold the maps which come on CD. I put in a 256MB card instead, and it holds about 6 states on it. I have some other states on another spare 256MB card if I'm traveling beyond my standard routes/states.

To make it easier to move between the vehicles, I called the company and ordered some more cigarette lighter power cords (it doesn't run on 12v, but something like 5v). I cut the ends off and extended the wiring, and permanently ran the wires in the trucks. Now I just grag the Navman (leaving the suction cup bracket mounted to it) and it travels between the vehicles easily.

As a side note, you MUST register the Navman the first time you use it by hooking it up to your computer. Don't expect to grab it out of the box and fire it up on the way home. You have to hook it up to a computer at least one time before it will work for the registration process and to load up the maps.

Also, Delphi has private labeled the same unit, and sells it at Circut City ( http://www.circuitcity.com/detail.jsp?c=1&b=g&u=c&qp=0&bookmark=bookmark_0&oid=82783&catoid=-10181&m=0 ). I paid $1000 for mine about a year ago, but I've seen it at Circuit City for $600 now under the Delphi brand.

Overall, I I have pretty much come to the conclusion that the new Pioneer AVIC-N1 is the BEST all around package. it is DVD/CD/Navigation/MP3/Blah/Blah/Blah... touch screen, vehicle G-force, slope monitors, compass, etc... all kinds of stuff.

It is the only unit I believe that has a BUILT IN GPS navigation system. the other units like kenwood are the same price as the pioneer, but then you have to pay another 1800 just for the navigation unit!!! it is STUPID!

If interested, check it out on pioneers website. Let me know if you would like to purchase one- I am opening an account with pioneer soon, and I need to make a large buy-in. I will offer these units at very close to my cost for that order, just to get my buy-in way up. It looks like I will have 5-6 of the N1's on the order right now.

Daniel, let me know what you can get the AVIC for. My buddy just called me and he got hooked up with an installer that buys in bulk and installs them for dealerships. He gave me a price (what this guy buys it for.........I think normal retail is about $2300 or so. I think I will get one for the H2 and pull the Clarion flip out and install that in the RT. Keep me posted. Thanks

I want to be able to use the GPS in whatever car I happen to be driving, whether the Viper, wife's, rental or SUV. Therefore, as a portable unit with a couple of different mounts I ordered a Magellan 700 after comparing it to the Garmin 2620. You can get either online for around $1,000.

VIPERCANE- My pricing SHOULD be 1400-1500, depending on how large of a buy in I can make. I am still waiting to hear back from the rep with the specifics.

FWIW, I did a bunch of research and ended up with the Magellan RoadMate 700:

http://www.magellangps.com/en/products/product.asp?PRODID=955

It's got a built-in HD with maps covering all of North America, and can easily be moved from vehicle (Viper) to vehicle (HEMI RAM) to vehicle (Durango 5.9 R/T). This is the unit used by the Hertz rental fleet.

This is the baby that's going to get me to VOI.8!

Amazon is selling it for $1,127 at the moment.
