I was looking at my intake today and noticed something underneath it. It looks like a rats nest. It's a bunch of fiberous material kind of like a carpet pad that's been ground up. Is there a heat pad or something that disintegrated or is this something that somehow blew into the engine compartment and got lodged under the intake. It's two handfuls of stuff so I cannot see how it got underneath the intake.

Almost looks something like the interior of some cheap upholstery. Maybe got sucked up while you were driving? My $0.02

It would have been from the previous owner(s). What is stumping me is that it is a large amount of material. How would it get underneath the intake?? There's not that much room. I got most of it out with a long screwdriver fishing it between the plenums and blew the rest out with my air compressor.

Good point...not much room. Have you checked your plug wires to make sure any rats from the rats nest haven't been gorging themselves?

Rodent nest - the space under the intake is perfect for
winter sleeping, especially if you don't drive your car
uring those months. Good thing you found it.

I wonder if there's any dead rodents under there? Didn't see any but they may have come out last night at the track.

Is this where the term RAT motor comes from? Nice warm motors for them to sleep? :)

You have a mouse nest. I had the same thing happen in another car, however, they built it in the inlet duct to the the heater, now that was nasty.

One of our members that keeps one of his Vipers up at his place in Lake Tahoe had a squirrel store away about a bushel of nuts under his intake. Its a ***** to get out.

Looks like an old vaginal toupee, common in Arizona. Put it on eBay and see how you do.

AHhh yes, It's my ex wife's husband's hair piece. He's been looking for that damn thing. Wait 'till I tell him where it wound up. It actually looks better in your picture than on his head.

If you suspect you may have this problem when you store your car, there is a simple solution. Put a single moth ball in some type of container (plastic cap, even a piece of tin foil) on top of your engine where it will be easy for you pull back out in the Spring. Of course, only put it there after the engine has cooled down! It works like a charm to keep the critters away. :D

And rodents particularly like spark plug wire boots, they make fine eating.

One time I went out to check the oil in my Benz bofore I started it. Good thing I did cause a cat was sleeping on one of the Pulleys! That would have been a serious mess!!

The real question is "where did it come from?". Hopefully not from your seats. It is definitely upholstery material but could be from a source further away from the car or the previous owner as stated.

I had mice store pieces of dog food in the hood of one my vehicles years ago. The dog food was stored 50 feet away on another level. There was a rattle when I would open the hood and the dog food would roll down inside the structural braces.

They also had eaten through the air filter and stashed dog food in the air box. I put cage wire over the intake to impede their entrance.

When I took the cover off of our washing machine to find out why it wouldn't run I found about 10 pounds of dog food in the bottom and one piece was wedged between the belt and the pulley.

The dog food is now kept in a sealed trash can and we have a cat.

Now I have to work on the barn where the Viper will be stored. I don't mind them snuggling up to the warm engines on the tractors or quad but the Viper is off limits. :nono:

Touche Dexter with the Merkin reference!

The Merkin is the female equivalent of the Codpiece.

Both serve to "increase one's package." A bulge for the codpiece and a mound for the merkin.
