my ONLY regret is the lightweight flywheel, low speed bucking, parking lot speeds are a pain and the fact that you HAVE to speed shift or your rpm's will plummit between shifts, yeah not too happy with it as far as streetability but as a performance mod, it works. STILL REGRET IT THO

Does anyone else see this as a huge problem? I was actually wondering about this exact thing since I plan on purchasing a lightweight flywheel this summer..

The only two I know of that seem worth buying are Fidanza(Aluminum - 18lbs) and Chromoly(Steel - 22lbs).

Yes, I had the same issues in my TransAm with a Fidanza. Not to mention I learned how to drive stick with that set-up... talk about stalling. :lmao:

After I put my Fidanza in it took about 1/2 a second to get used to it.

It's apparently not for schoolgirls ;)

Dave,

Just wondering....Did you also do a new clutch and hydraulic slave cylinder at the same time you installed the Flywheel?

Yes. I will almost always replace those items when the tranny is out. $500 is too cheap not to. My DIY with pics of that project is at VA.

At the search field on the top menu bar type dave6666. It will return my user profile. Go there and click on threads started by me. Clutch is OEM Luk $195 from auction site.

What clutch did you use?

I did change also my clutch and flywheel with the SPEC Super Twin Clutch + aluminum flywheel. It is really amazing. Instant response , especially at high rpms.
You will get used to it.

Not regret that.

I've heard good things about the SPEC Clutches.

However, I've heard good things about CenterForce Clutches too. So that is what I'll be looking into regardless of some negative comments about them on the forums..

Is the rotating assembly balance ever an issue when replacing the flywheel and clutch? I never thought of it before, but during a rebuild I learned about the machine shops balancing the cranks with the rods and pistons. Not sure if the flywheel, clutch and harmonic balancer come into play.

Balancing everything together is always best. I have no idea if that is ever done with a Viper engine. The flywheel is of course balanced stand alone. My dune buggy engines - VW flat 4 air cooled - were always done with the accessories on the crank. Way different animal though. That whole mess would almost fit in your lunch box. :smirk:

I saw someone say they did a balance with everything on the engine, but for the most part it seems people have just tossed on clutches and flywheels too. I read in one thread that some of the flywheels are balanced, but the Fidanza (what I bought) is not. Then again, the Fidanza writeups say they are :dunno:

A coworker said they use a different harmonic balancer for a different flywheel in the Mustang world.

Yes but in the automotive business you have to design the vehicle so that EVERY single one thats rolls off the assembly line is able to go for xxxxxx amount of miles without a hickup. So the performance is limited by the least well manufactured parts beeing used on the assembly line.

If everything is checked out and replaced for good/better parts the vehicles are able to do miracles.

I agree that some parts are simple swaps, like the exhaust.

But for bigger mods the vehicle is a system tuned to work together. Having put a turbo on a non OEM turbo charged vehicle it is not as simple as swapping parts and being good to go. The engine electronic calibrations likely (I am being generous here) will need reprogramming. And normally that gets done by some person under 1 set of conditions but never evaluated in extremed conditions. I am not saying it won't run. I am saying it is likely not likely optimal for all conditions.

For funnies once, I personally drove the Davis Dam test. That in NV desert. A test is miles loooooong up hill in August at peak heat in day. 120F in the shade. You'd be surprised how much a calibrator learns during that test. Next stop is Bemidji MN (north of Ontario) in January for an equally grueling deep freeze performance test not just the powertrain but brakes too. You'd also be surprised what fails in both.

Please understand, I am not saying that you can't make the modification work. And it may work adequately within your usage conditions. I am saying some swaps are not as simple trading out parts. My experience is that reliability is diminished as untested mods increase.

My first paint job wasn't, how should we say, well recieved...

The HIDs were a HUGE waste of time and money for me, but other than that I've been
happy with everything else I've done so far.

i regret doing my performance mods a little at a time. should have done them all at once. you don't really notice 10 to 20 hp increases. i would have rather done them all at once and felt a 50 to 70 hp jump.

3.55 gears, total waste of time and money.
315 Kumho's in front, car seeks grooves like a russian missile without tail fins...

100HP shot of nitrous, should have gone 300HP right away. (figured that one out 2 months later):D

me too, sounds sooooo much better, best $130 mod (price includes x-pipe install p&l)

I'd like to see Dodge put stickers on certain parts...

"The government made us put this crap on your car but you'll have much more fun if you remove it."

The future TC button could use a sticker like that.

I bet you have metallic high-flow cats... Call Jon B. at Parts Rack and get some ceramic cats and that will do the trick--really, I did that on my Gen 2 and it made a world of difference. It was still strong sounding, but didn't make my ears bleed. Call Jon, he will have an answer for you.

Please give a couple examples of these extreme condition failures. :eater:

I am sure that most people that do forced induction expect to have incremental parts failures over time if they are well enough informed. They feel it is worth it for the short term to go ludicrous speed which is an addiction that can go on till the money drys up. I would be one of them if I didn't need my license for my job. I have to force myself to be content with using stickers to go faster :D till I can afford the time to race at the track.

"What mods do you regret?" as a thread promises to be both informative and hilarious.
