I use Mobil 1. Castrol Syntec is not a "real" synthetic in the traditional sense. There was a lawsuit by Mobil, but Castrol can use the synthetic nomenclature with some provisos... If I heard things right, Syntec is a traditional oil-from-the-ground oil which has been treated under extreme pressure with water. I'm not a tribologist (lubrication specialist Ph.D.) so I'm not sure if what results is the same or better than more expensive synthetics. There are turbo fanatics which also prefer Mobil synthetic oils, but they prefer straight 30 weight synthetic oil. The viscosity modifiers which "thicken" the oil at higher temperatures are plastics which break down into varnish eventually. This stuff tends to coke up turbo bearings. Unfortunately, straight 30 weight Mobil 1 synthetic is only available in large quantities, not your convenient 1 quart bottles. That said -- I had a turbo on a Saturn and ran it with 10-30 Castrol Syntec because that was the best oil Oil Can Henry (a Jiffy Lube kinda place) had. When I replaced the turbo after 15K miles -- the bearings were clean and there was no coking in the center housing. If you replace your oil at 3K mile intervals, Castrol is probably OK.

The reason Castrol "won" the National Advertising Division (of the Better Business Bureau) dispute was because there is no technical definition of base oils that differentiates between the performance of synthetic base oil and other high viscosity index, low aromatic Groupp III+ base oils. In the same decision, the part they "lost" was a superiority claim, so the proviso is they stop saying their oil is better.

One could say that the synthetic base oils got the name "synthetic" first, but the performance is the same. While there is a minor difference in pour point of unadditized PAO and unadditized Group III oils, that difference goes away as soon as the additive package is included.

And we all know it's the additives that make the difference.

I use Royal Purple (first choice) and Red Line, with Mobil One filter. I never use Mobil One in my Viper because it burns way to fast.

Well, here we go again!!!

We have been using Mobil DelVac 1 - synthetic diesel motor oil for over 2 years now. Negligible oil loss even as cars are tracked extensively. Oil does a GREAT job of dispersing contaminants and has been formulated for ultimate protection. We have been very happy with it.

We are in the midst of changing from Mobil 1 oil filters to NAPA Gold. We had a Mobil 1 oil filter fail on start up and the failure analysis report shows that an "end cut" of gasket material was used in its manfacture. The end cuts are supposed to be thrown away, as they are not even on both sides. Champion Labs (they manufacture Mobil 1 filters) told me their current process was to throw away the end cuts (well obvioulsy SOMEONE doesn't know that...), so there was no corrective action to insure that this did not happen again. After this, I have heard of at least one other Mobil 1 oil filter failure. The NAPA Gold appears to be a very good design, and have guinea pigged it on my Volkswagen before the Viper. Expect to be pleased with it in the Viper, as well. (Thanks, GTS Dean)

I would stick with the factory fill (Mobil 1) or something close to it...

We exclusively use Amsoil oil filters and synthetic oil in all our customers' street and racing Vipers. We've had zero issues with Amsoil products and consider them among the best!
(PS--I do keep the oil and filters in stock. Thanks to those of you who I've shipped them to all the way across the country!!)

I use Series 2000 0W-30 Amsoil synthetic oil along with an Amsoil oil filter. I have used these products with good results for over 26 years.

Janni..I don't believe the NAPA gold filter has the same filtering capacity or filtration efficiency of a Mobil 1 or Amsoil filter. It's too bad Champion's quality control may be suspect in other areas. Amsoil filters are manufactured by Baldwin, a well known name in the filter industry.
