I called this dealer who had this Viper listed up on Ebay, because I could drive to get the car (one of the few vipers thats within 5 hours away)...

First off, what do you think this car is worth, private party, and then what would you expect the dealer to be offering as a bottom line? The car looks good, one owner 20k miles, exactly what I'm looking for since I am intending to put a bunch more miles on the car myself. I've seen a Blue/White 1996 with 25k miles go for 40,500$ on ebay, so I was thinking slightly over or something.

I know what the dealer was "asking" over the phone, but I'll mention it after you guys decide what you think its worth.

I want a viper so bad..... I'm afraid I'm gunna get wreckless and just buy the wrong car at the wrong price - I'm stupid and immature like that.

From personal experience, In May I bought my 1996 Viper RT/10 White with blue stripes. Came with AC and a hardtop ($3000 option). 12,000 miles. The car is in absolutely mint condition. I searched for about 8 months without any success. So to answer your question - I paid $ 38,000 US (59,000 Canadian).

Here in Canada - its almost impossible to find one, but 1996's run for about 60-70k Canadian.

Btw - When I first saw the pic's of the white with blue viper, I said, "Yuck" but in person, its amazing.

Good Luck.

I just set up a meeting with a guy 5 miles away who has a White Viper with blue stripes, and 13k miles. WHAT ARE THE CHANCES, identical to what you bought!

http://www.autotrader.com/findacar/vdetail.jtmpl?car_id=137002496&dealer_id=&car_year=1996&make=DODGE&distance=300&max_price=57000&model=VIPER&end_year=2002&advcd_on=n&min_price=10000&address=19008&search_type=used&advanced=n&start_year=1996&color=&cardist=5

He is asking 45k, it sounded fair, until I saw this post atleast. What should I offer? 42k?

Tell me what you think man - I'm gunna be meeting the guy at 3pm!

Hey Hey, no insults on my fine piece of Pony Pride guys! My Mustang is packing 260 stock horses. Everyone of you would be quivering at the line versus my 5 speed.

Just playing....

Seriously though, I'll probably just autotrade my Mustang after I buy the Viper. I have cash to get the viper without needing to use the mustang as a trade. Would be nice to maybe save tax dollars or something but no big deal.

=)

If I were you, I'd bump up the search a year to a 1997. The difference in engine between a Gen1 and Gen2 is huge.

Ok, no insults. Just curious, your 19? How do you have money for a Viper? If I dont ask, someone will. :p Also, I thought you were looking for a GTS? The white w/blue stripes is an RT. The ONLY GTS that you will find that is white w/blue stripes is the GTS-R and the VERY RARE 3 (if I remember corectly) that were given to the top DC guys.

There are significant differences between Blue/white GTSs and White/blue RT/10s made in 1996, are you aware of them?

Again, I paid 38,000 US. I put a factory 5 yr, 60000 miles bumper to bumper warranty at a cost of 4,500. So as far as math goes - thats 42,500. I still think my car is well worth it. There is no other car that has given me as much satisfaction in owing, not to mention all the looks!

Good luck! Happy dealing!

I only said White with Blue stripes cause some guy real local has an RT10 I can go look at. Not sure about that color combo though. My favorite is Yellow with black stripes but I dont wanna buy 2001 (too much money, and I dont like ABS).

I also love that guy on here with teh silver car, blue stripes, with cactus in the background. Looks amazing.

Out of curiousity, whats the cost for a quality paint job to just reapply to the car, and is it recommended?

BUBS, SLOW down. You need to learn and understand Vipers and what to look for and what to stay away from.

Here is a list that our own slaughterJ came up with with some additions:

Buying a used Viper

While doing research on used vipers, I assembled a general list of questions I wanted to get answered, some of which were dealer-specific (at the bottom). It does not have year-specific questions, for example, for the 98 whether it has the upgraded fan. It does have a few RT/10 specific questions though. Hopefully this can be of help to others.

Used Viper Questions:

General:
1.Year?
2. Price?
3. Mileage?
4. Clean title?
5. VIN #?
6. Existing lien?
7. In service date?

Equipment:
1. Stock/original, minor modifications (K&N filters, smooth tubes), or more?
2. Exterior and Interior Color? (stripes?)
3. Nature of CD player (single in-dash, trunk player, etc.)?
4. Soft-top, hardtop, or both?
5. Bag for soft-top?
6. Bikini top and bag
7. Tonneau cover?
8. Car cover?
9. Existing Factory warranty / extended warranty (or provide additional)?

Condition:
1. General Condition (any nicks, chips, scratches, window cracks, etc.?)?
2. Involved in an accident, damaged, repainted, etc.?
3. Condition under front bumper / spoiler?
4. Condition of top(s)? (Soft-top sagging? Exterior condition?)
5. How maintained? (One owner? How long have you had it?)
6. Leather condition? (Split/cracked/worn?)
7. Tires condition? Brand/Size (Reasonable tread?)
8. Floor mats condition?
9. Smoker / non-smoker?
10. Nitrous used?
11. Used for track events (strip, track, and autocross)?
12. Condition of the rocker panels (top and underside)
13. Condition of inside the door rocker area
14. Scrapes under front bumper / spoiler?
15. Bottomed out?

From a dealer
1. Processing fees?
2. Taxes? (out of state?)

Differences between GenI and GenII: there are two other big ones (besides the exhaust) that stand out:

1. The engine
The majority of reference to “GenI and GenII” refers to engine changes, as there are several differences between the two engines, not the least of which is horsepower. GenI was rated at 400hp, later GenI (96) were rated at 415, and the GenII is rated at 450 (ACR & GT2 rated at 460 due to smooth tubes and filters).

2. The hood
The GenI cars have "smoothie" hoods with no NACA duct between the headlights and no vents above the wheel wells. The cars look different from the front with these changes.

3. Suspension
Changed to GenII suspension in 96. Both the GTS and RT have the same GenII components.

4. Exhaust
Went to rear exit exhaust in 1996

5. Other changes
Power windows, airbags, steering wheel, method of opening the doors, differential housing, CD player, speedometer, wheels, all changed from GenI to GenII

That said, I can tell you that both are a blast to drive.
You can't go wrong with any Viper. Period.

NOW, start your search.
AND, GET A WARRANTY, parts and repairs ain't FORD territory!

Re: What should I offer for this.... Price games

45K too high for a '96 with 13,000 miles. Then again, if you love the car, take it. These cars are rare, and a few thousand here or there is subjective. Ask him to go down to 41K or 42K - say that you are passionate about the car, but being young, etc., you weren't looking to spend more than 40K on a car. However, say that you recognize the value of this Viper to its owner, and you'd go at 42K. This is all contingent on the fact that the car is clean, carfax is good, and that you love the car. If not, I'd recommend a Gen. 1 for you. You can find one under 40K, and still have all the thrills, do mods as you can, and make it into your dream ride. That is what I am doing.
