3.07 is stock

600 hp doesn't need 3.73

So that leaves 3.33 - 3.55, and I'm going with 3.33 (which I also had and liked in my '05 with 475 rwhp)

This is another thing that gripes me about the rags testing the Viper with its 3:07 stock gear ratios, against other competitors with 3:45 or lower gear ratios in the 1/4 mile. The recent test with the 559 Ferrari, had someone on this site up in arms that it was faster in the quarter than the Viper.......but....what was the final gear ratio? Let's put the 3:55's in the Viper and see what happens (along with more difficult to control wheel spin). The difference with my S/C'd 05 was startling, going from the 3:07's.......to the 3:55's. It seems to be the ratio of choice for me. I had an S/C'd (Roe) 94 with 3:73's, and had great difficulty with wheel spin in 1st and 2nd gear......the 05 with the 3:55's and more hp has less wheel spin problems than the 94 did.......IMHO the 3:55's are the perfect ratio.

This has been a big issue for me. The Copperhead special Vipers came w/ 3:55, and this makes me believe that the SRT engineers are on to something. I am seriously wondering if the 3:55's are the perfect gear, if not, why did DC pick these for the Copperhead?

3.07's in my Copperhead.

According to one of the charts floating around in these posts, max speed in 4th with 3.55's is 131 MPH - with 3.07's it 151 MPH. Everytime I've been to Pocono (including this past Tuesday), my shift light comes on in 4th gear at about 150...

Copperheads did not come with a special gear ---- all Vipers come with 3.07s.

Gearing for Road Course use ,it definitely appears best to stay with 3.07s. For the strip, many prefer the 3.55s, but with the new car ( which is what the question was about ) , it appears the extra rpm range and the gearing may be perfect to get through the quarter mile with the stock setup. Keep in mind that currently 0-60 times are done without a shift at all, with grip being the only limiting factor , and as we all know that is often just an indicator of the track surface.

I went to a Quaiffe and 3.55's .. reason is that 6th gear was totally unusable at speeds below 85-90mph. Now the mileage is BETTER cruising at 75-80mph because I don't have to hold it to the floor to maintain speed even here in relatively flat Florida.

The issue has nothing to do with horsepower, it has everything to do with torque and at what engine RPM's that happens. On a Gen3 or Gen4 with the 19" [ 27.5" dia ] rear wheels your RPM's at 80mph are under 1500, by going to 3.55's they are now about 1750. The difference in torque / mechanical advantage is considerable for the 300 rpm difference.

I suspect the WOT top speed in 6th with either 3.07 or 3.55 gear will be very close to the same in street trim, it will just get there quicker with the 3.55's.

Using some form of super charging where you have boost just off idle would negate this somewhat. My comments are generally more applicable to NA cars though you'll probably find the driveability to be much better and more responsive with the 3.55's regardless of the power adder.

Just my humble 0.02 worth.

[/FONT]To showcase their new Mopar Parts Catalogue, DaimlerChrysler put together a special Viper that was fitted with all the new pieces.

Called the Copperhead Edition, this Viper benefits from new headers, a comp camshaft and a side exhaust, all which help add 44 bhp and 48 fl lbs of torque.

To help get the additional power to the rear wheels Dodge has added a Quaife differential with a 3:55 ring and pinion set.

Exterior modifications include Mopar Sidewinder Wheels a custom carbon fiber body kit made by Skunkwerk.

Other touches include a Custom rear glass, Brembro lightweight brakes, Sparco Custom Seats and a short-throw shifter.

Most of these parts will be available from any local Dodge dealer.

This is where I got the 3:55 gear for the Copperhead from.

The Copperhead Limited Edition was done in 300 examples in 2005, and they were all Convertibles. The color was also done in 2006 , Coupe only, but with only 50 Vipers done in this color --- not called a Copperhead Edition, just a paint code.

Likely this show car was called a Copperhead, but it was not a production car, and hence it did illustrate other modifications. Needless to say , they did make some cool changes and it is easy to see why there was some confusion.

I'm curious: Has anyone ever run their car in the quarter mile with stock 3:07 gears and then 3:55 (or other) aftermarket gears?

What were the differences (if any) to the e.t. and mph?

My car is different than most SRT-10s because I run 18 inch rear wheels, and have closer ratio (.8 and .62) 5th and sixth gears.

I plugged my numbers into a gear calculator and came up with the following data:
Here is my current 3.07 (stock) rear gear:

Here is a 3.33 rear gear:

Here is a 3.55 rear gear:

It seems like the 3.55 ratio makes the best use of all 6 gears.

Any wisdom, enlightenment, comments, etc. on these various gear ratios?

I have the 3.55 in 2006 coupe (stock tires)and get redlines like in the 3.33 chart above 1st gear 52 mph, 2nd 78mph, 3rd about 109. I really like this gear and don't think I would want any higher. My .02

Interesting. Stock 19" does provide for quite different mph though. Nice custom 5th/6th ratios...
