What's a MAP Sensor???

What\'s a MAP Sensor???

Viperholics,

Can someone tell me what a MAP sensor is, and what purpose it serves? My CHECK ENGINE LIGHT came on due to a bad MAP sensor, according to my mechanic. The Viper ('98 GTS) was runnning rough, very rich, bucking, and idling strange. Do you guys think replacing this is the solution???? I pick up the car tomorrow.

P.S. - The mechanic said my rear O2's are not producing any error codes --> being I put on a high flow exhaust & high flow cats, I thought that might by what was causing the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. I guess not.....

I know what a MAF sensor is...It's Mass Air Flow. I don't think Vipers have that though...

Manifold Air Pressure. In carburetor days, you would have said manifold vacuum. It's used to calculate how much air the engine is consuming.

Thanks, everyone. Sounds like the new MAP Sensor is going to solve my problems. A special thanks to Karl Schuneman, for providing that tech. manual insight. I guess I'm gonna have'ta buy one of those things.....

Isn't that still considered illegal?

If not, then there are a few blondes I'd like to buy. Course, my wife most likely wouldn't let me keep them...........
