What's it Worth???

I'm looking at buying a '96 GTS Coupe with only 1600 miles on the odometer. The car looks factory fresh, and has spent most of its life sitting in a climate controlled garage. The owner has all documentation including the coupon needed to purchase the car. He even saved the original battery and oil filter. Any thoughts on price?

Man I would think north of 60 even with the depressed market, but if you plan on driving it that car is going to need some serious maintenance.

It's great to be back in the Blue/White club again! I didn't realize just how much I'd miss my Viper once I sold it two years ago, and I've been looking for a high quality replacement ever since. My advice to all Viper owners (especially blue/white) is DON'T SELL YOUR CAR BECAUSE YOU WILL REGRET IT!!! Oh, and my second favorite color is the grey/silver combo from 2000.

A question though! Ive often wondered, if you buy a low mileage classic car, do you use it as it was intended or store it away as purley an investment? Someware down the line there has to be a trade off between the two? Any thoughts?

That's a great question, and frankly speaking...I don't know what I'm going to do with this thing. My first inclination is to keep the miles extremely low and see where the GTS market ends up in the next few years. My gut tells me that if Dodge pulls the plug on Viper by 2010, this GTS will likely be worth a lot more money. That's my two cents anyway...

Wasn't such a great investment for the original owner was it?
Paid at least 70K for it, stored it, cared for it, babied it and then 12 years later sold it for a loss.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention never got to enjoy it.

Drive it. I bought mine with only 8K on it last fall, and happily have put 2K on it since. I plan on adding a lot more.

Yes, the tires are original and they even still have the "nubbies" on them. The car drives amazingly well, but I think a new set of tires wouldn't hurt!

Having low miles on the car is a great thing.. I know from personal experience buying one you feel the need to find the car that has the lowest miles... which is good to benefit you knowing your driving a car that is most likely in better condition perhaps then one with a ton more miles.. even tho this might not always be the case, it seems to be "most" of the time since cars with lower miles tend to be in better condition..

However, I know cars that are bone stock are worth more; but I plan on modding my car and styling it to suit my own needs.. I bought the car because its the car ive always wanted... whether Chrysler stops producing the Viper or not will not change anything in my opinion..even if the car is worth more money that's nice but doesn't really benefit me..

I plan on driving it and enjoying it- I don't plan on ever selling it.. so being worth more money in the future is nice to know but I don't plan on reaping those benefits by selling it.. If i want something else I'll just buy something else once this is paid off- which I plan on doing

Enjoy your car and drive it. What is the point of buying a nice car anyways and not driving it to keep the miles low? To sell it in the future? If that's the case then your buying the wrong car.. Buy a car you want to keep not sell or at least keep for a LONG time...I dunno, I figure when buying a specialty car like this you should be buying it in the intention on DRIVING it, not already having any thoughts about keeping the miles low and/or selling it in the future.. at least that is how I feel

If you had it "transported" home, change the oil and park it, cover it up and go find a driver that has the mods that improve these cars. Good luck on the value.

If you drove it home, I guess that you realise that once you do the maintenance it'll be a great driver. Congrats on buying one of the best driving cars on the planet!

My thoughts are to go somewhere in the middle. You have to drive the car and enjoy it but having bought a car with 1600 miles on it you can drive it and still have a low mileage car down the road. When it comes to that point where more mileage is going to hurt it as a collectable, THEN you can make the decision to continue to drive the crap out of it or put it away to sell it.

In my case I will have to try to put more than 2000 miles a year on it with my schedule. Realistically I will be lucky to put 1000 miles a year on mine.
