Picked up a 2000 GTS yesterday with under 7,000 miles. The car was like new and owned by a finatic. QUESTION: The transmission has a high pitched whine that is notible over 40 mph in 4,5,& 6 gears. The pitch does not change regardless of gear. The whine goes away when you back off the throttle. My Gen I does not do this. Any ideas on what is causing this and how to correct?? The car has a an extended warranty.

mine 2002 does the same thing... ever since brand new anything over 50 or so will produce a pronounced whine from the tranny. the rearend will whine too until the diff fluid warms up.

i consider it a part of the deal.

I have learned that the VIper makes all sorts of weird noises, whines, clunks, creaks. If someone says, "Whats that noise?" Just reply, "Power".

My 99 RT/10 had 4600 miles when I picked up and it also had the whine noise exactly as you described. After several hundred miles, I had the rear gears changed out to 3:55's. It not only solved the whine noise, but it also gave me more seat of the pants acceleration.

For further information, do a search via the archives.

Good luck.

I've never had that whine in either of my two Snakes, a 95 RT-10 and a 96 GTS. Is it possible that the person before you already changed the rear end gears and that is causing the whine. I've heard aftermarket gears whine...for sure.

Whining is definately coming frm the transmission, not the rear. Based on other responses, this sounds normal in some vipers. Thanks to all for responding!!

RT/ED,
Trust me, I also thought it was coming from the transmission. However, my local Viper Tech Jason Heffner diagnosed the problem, changed out the rear gears, and presto, the whine noise is gone. Hence, it is NOT your transmission. I suggest you contact someone like Jason for clarification.

BTW, my after market gears DO NOT WHINE. I also believe there may be subtle differences between Russ' GEN1 experience and my GEN2 experience.
