I HAVE A 2001 VIPER ACR(ABS EQUIPPED) THAT HAD 63 MILES ON IT WHEN I BOUGHT IT. I DROVE APPROXIMATELY 1000 MILES ON IT TO BREAK EVERYTHING IN. AT THE 250 MILE MARK I CHANGED OIL & FILTER TO PENZOIL 10-40 [NON-SYNTHETIC) WEIGHT. AT 1250 MILE MARK I CHANGED OIL & FILTER TO CASTROL 5-50 WEIGHT FULLY SYNTHETIC AND USED A K&N PERFORMANCE GOLD OIL FILTER. ANY WAY, AT ABOUT THE 600 MILE MARK I STARTED REVVING ENGINE RPM'S TO ABOUT 4000-4500 RPM DURING GEAR SHIFTS TO GET A FINAL PISTON-RING SEAT ON MOTOR, AND STARTED DOING SOME FAIRLY AGGRESSIVE BRAKING TO GET A FINAL SEAT IN ON MY BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS. IT WAS AT THIS TIME WHEN I FIRST NOTICED THIS RECURRING PROBLEM THAT I AM HAVING "WHITE SMOKE FROM BACK OF CAR". THIS ONLY HAPPENS WHEN I DO A MINIMUM OF 4-5 HIGH SPEED(80 MPH) BRAKE STOPS IN A ROW. THEN AFTER THIS PROCESS WHEN I AM STOPPED AND THE MOTOR IS IDLING THERE IS NO WHITE SMOKE BUT IF I REV UP THE MOTOR 4500-5000 RPM'S I WILL SEE LOTS OF WHITE SMOKE. OR IF I TAKE OFF RIGHT AWAY AFTER STOPPING I WILL SEE BIG CLOUD OF WHITE SMOKE. I NOW HAVE 2000 MILES ON THE CAR AND THIS PROBLEM WILL STILL OCCUR WHENEVER I SIMULATE THIS DRIVING TECHNIQUE, BUT NOT AT ANY OTHER TIME. THIS HAS TO BE OIL BLOW-BY FROM THE PISTON RINGS. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THE OIL PUMP IS GETTING STARVED(OIL PAN SLOSH) FROM HIGH G-LOADS UNDER HARD BRAKING? IF SO ANY BODY ROADRACING THESE CARS MUST BE EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM. IF SO LET ME KNOW SOLUTION(BAFFLED OIL PAN)ETC. I RUN 10 QUARTS OF OIL. ALSO HOW DO I APPROACH MY DODGE DEALER TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM? I KNOW THE CAR IS UNDER WARRANTY BUT THE ONLY WAY IT WILL EXHBIT THIS SYMPTOM IS UNDER THE PREVIOUSLY STATED SCENARIO. I GUESS I WILL JUST HAVE TO TAKE THEM OUT FOR THE RIDE OF THEIR LIFE. LOL!!!!

I think you will find your oil is rushing to the front of the engine and filling up the timing cover where the fixed orifice "PCV" system draws.

So instead of getting crankcase "gases," it gets liquid oil.

You probably get the white smoke when you let off the brake and first touch the gas pedal.

The engine pings pretty good too because your burning massive amounts of oil which detonates quite handily.

My 2000 does this.

Other people have put reservoir tanks in the PCV system so that there is always gas to **** thru the orifice.

Your detailed description was quite accurate.

Tom Sessions at Watkins Glen called some inside contacts and the problem has been identified and there will probably be a fix many months (unfortunately) from now.

Yep, Tom's post above is right on the money. If you do a search you will find other posts with the same problem. I think there is some "puke can" that can be put on?? I think JonB from the Parts Rack sells them?? How any quarts of oil does a 2001 take? You said 10 quarts which may be too much, that can worsen the problem if you overfill.

NON-Synthetic is NOT part of Break-in Procedures!
NON-Synthetic should NEVER be used in a Viper engine!!
I'll give you a little advice Delete some of your Post, and hope your Dealer hasn't read it yet!

Tomatper is right, this is oil that goes from the valve covers forward through the breather tube and into the air box in front of the air filter. If you open the airbox, you will see it all over the filter. This only happens during hard braking as you would find on a track. The fix is a puke can made by K&P in Denver. This device acts as a breather for the valve covers, collecting the small amount of oil that goes down the tube, instead of dumping it into the air filter. Call Kip on 303-697-5821. See picture.

I think you're being a bit overzealous with the party line. I read the man's break-in procedure and I think it's very reasonable. As a matter of fact, it sounds almost exactly like the way I broke in both my Vipers.

If you're going to throw away (er, pardon me, RECYCLE) 1000 miles worth of breakin oil full of ring and cylinder wall iron, plus casting flash and assembly rag lint, why would anyone want to use $4/qt. synthetic oil?

This is why this board is so great! That discussion just solved a problem that's been worrying me greatly. Got 1000 miles on my 01 GTS and several times lately I've noticed clouds of white smoke belching out just after I start the car and ONLY when it's in the parking garage at work!??!

Why only at work and never any other time/place? tomatper's description brought it all to light for me. My drive to work finishes with a high-speed (110mph) left-hand sweeper followed by a VERY hard brake down to a 1st gear right-hand hairpin then 100 yds slow uphill to the parking garage. I don't notice any white smoke after the hard brake section probably because I'm almost immediately in the garage and the car's shut down. Then when I start the car up to leave ... bingo! There's the oil smoke.

Thanks, y'all!

I too have had this happen on my 99 ACR at various track events. What if anything is the downside or what in particular is at risk due to this occurrance?

"Puke Can" on PCV System works great for that type of driving!
It might be little hard to claim that under Warranty!

The Non-Synthetic is what I have a problem with!

Syn-oil is cheap in comparison to the price of a new motor!
