Who has broken something drag racing?

Looks like I'm likely going to buy a pair of BFG G-force Drag Radials and some 18x13 SSR Comp wheels to go with them.

So, what can I expect to break next time I'm down at the track?

Has anyone here actually broken stuff on their car while drag racing?

Anyone really broken a half shaft? Anyone blown a clutch? Anyone had any other pieces of their SRT destruct on the strip?

Please. Tell me your stories.

Reasonably powered SRT's - look out for half shafts and rear ends. If you want to forget about breakage, call Heffner.

I suppose that it's always better to go with stronger parts, but I'm wondering if it is really necessary in a reasonably powered Viper.

Has anyone ever actually broken a half shaft on an SRT-10 with a stock motor?

My engine is stock, (500 lb-feet rw torque) and I'd just as soon not buy a $1300 Unitrax half shaft if the stock half shaft is capable of handling the torque of the stock motor.

So . . . Does anyone have any real world actual drag racing experience with a reasonably powered SRT-10 where they broke a half shaft (or something else)?

Thanks for the pointer. Lots of interesting stuff in that thread. I'm already replacing the dif with a Quaife, so it seems like it's down to the drive shaft.

Unitrax won't have their SRT-10 shafts available for a few weeks yet.

Anyone have any experience with these guys?

They make a SRT-10 carbon fiber drive shaft rated to over 800 lb ft for only $700.

Has anyone ever broken a driveshaft (sorry if it's in the other thread but I'm not going to look)?

I think the rear has been the weakest link by far.

Well. I ordered the PST carbon fiber drive shaft today.

I'll let folks know how it works out. Between the carbon fiber shaft and the Quaife dif, I'm hoping that I've got all the bases covered now.

I have the carbon fiber drive shaft in my SRT. The drive shaft is not really a weak link in the car, but for the small cost, and easy installation, it's a good investment.

There is no weight savings, as the oem shaft is so short, and the c/f shaft is so much stronger, it will end up weighing a few ounces more than the oem shaft.

C/F shafts have many other benifits to them besides being very strong.

I found an interesting quote from Herb Helbig regarding the Gen III driveline:


“We made some changes for anti-dive and anti-squat,” Helbig added. “The other thing is the rear axle now has CV axle shafts; that allows the suspension to be less bound up.” The earlier Viper’s rear axles used conventional cardan universal joints that relied on a splined shaft for expansion as the suspension articulated. In reality, Helbig said, “Torque-wise, when you stand on the throttle hard, those splines have a tendency to lock up, so when you’re on it hard, the car wants to squat, and now this locked-up spline is preventing that axle shaft from going where it wants to go. So they’re kind of fighting.”
The new rear axle employs constant-velocity (CV) joints like those used on most front-wheel-drive cars. The use of so-called plunge joints allows the axle shafts to move freely regardless of the torque load. I’d expect this change to go a long way toward improving rear-end control in performance driving situations.

Not drag racing but just driving ******* the street, I tore up 2nd gear in the tranny. Presently in the shop with a new trans on order under warranty. I have driven my 01 so much harder and never broke. As a matter of fact I went home and did the same thing to the 01 as the 03 and it held up just fine. I hate to say that I was trying to break the 01 but I was just testing it a little. Is the Gen II car a little more solid or does the extra HP of the SRT just enough to start breaking things? :confused:
