Why do viper owners tend to keep miles so low?

I've had my GTS for a little over a year and a half now, and have put over 24000 miles on it. I have a company truck that they pay the gas in and still go for the Viper anytime I'm not at work. I've driven it 700 miles each way up to my daughter's house in Illinois and back twice. Hell, I'll drive 60 miles round trip just to go to Ft. Worth for a beer!:drive: Art ( And I'm 60 years old!!)
What an inspiration! :)

My reasoning is either A)I am too tired to drive it to work in the morning AND/OR B) Body parts are so expensive for this vehicle I don't want to damage stuff. Everytime I drive to work and cross paths with a transport I cringe because I am expecting a stone chip on the windshield

I absolutely loved driving both of the Vipers I have owned. I bought my RT/10 with 14k, one year later it was at 21k. My GTS had 16k 6 months later almost 19k. Both have been my daily drivers, you should see the looks I get when I tell other people that. But its true. I get groceries, go to walmart, run errands, where ever I need to go I do it in the snake.

I pick up the keys, as I walk out to the car its like everything in the world just stopped. I open the door, step in, close the door behind me. The next think I hear is the ROAR of a 700hp V10. At that point nothing else matters. I live in Houston. I sweat my A$$ off in my car. The A/C works fine but I rarely use it. I like to cruise with the windows down. When I hit traffic you feel like a hero, every gives you a thumbs up, they take pictures, and when they aren't you have a minute to listen to the cam, the valve train, the exhaust, and you feel the car rumble. I wish everyone felt the way I do in my Viper. Anytime someone asks, I give them a ride. I put the biggest smile on their face. I have even spent hours giving all the neighborhood kids laps around my subdivision. The parents take picture and smile, the kids go home with an awesome memory, and will hopefully be future Viper owners. My Vipers are an adventure for me. When I am not in a Viper, the adventure stops.

I may not have a Viper right now. But I will again. Its in my blood, it makes my soul scream. It wont matter about the mileage on the clock, just that I am behind the wheel.

98 RT/10 147,000 miles. If you feel comfortable driving a sports car you'll feel comfortable driving a Viper.
97 GTS 40,000 miles. Tracker.

That said, if I lived in Chicago instead of Tampa those miles would be about 1/3 of what they are.

I'd like to take a moment to THANK all you Viper owners who paid $80K+ for their Vipers. Sat them in their garages. Then decided to sell them when they were worth only 45k or less with only a few thousand miles. So I can have a next to new Viper GTS for only $45k. Thank you. Thank You. Thank You. :headbang:

Don't worry. I'll drive it like it was intended.

LOL seriously. I got mine in 09 with 14,800 on the clock which isn't really that low by viper standards but it was sitting for good periods between owners. I had so many problems as a result. Now that I am driving it, it feels like it is getting better as I go. I am currently at 27,300. I picked the car up this summer from Jason who kindly helped fix my balancer and it had 25,200 when I picked it up two months ago. I love driving and drive for fun all the time; even if I have nowhere to go. I think I am going to go take a midnight drive right now actually.

I really enjoy seeing the cars in the garage and as a special treat I take them out for a drive or a car show. Then I enjoy detailing them to perfection just for fun. I'm sure I'm an odd ball for using them this way but it's what I enjoy and have fun with.--2010 Viper--900mi.,2005 Viper-3600mi, Cobra-1100mi., and '84 Vette bought new- 9500mi.--Dave

I am in the same boat and have 2 other weekend cars to drive too.

I only put about 1k a year on mine.. few reasons for this. 1. I'm close to everything, furthest distance I travel is 6 miles. 2. I admit, If i think it's going to rain which happens a lot I wont drive it. 3. it's a toy. I have a wife and a child so if it's a family outing the viper isnt going anywhere.

I daily drove for 14 years (50K miles on my 94 (RIP) and 114K on my 01). The 01 is finally taking a break in the garage. There's nothing wrong with daily driving one, but the attention does get old and they are expensive to use as a daily driver. I'm enjoying the incognito benefits of a pt cruiser right now :)

Those are some impressive numbers and that is what I call return on investment. You are right though, it is a very expensive car to daily drive-mainly gas and tires. Next season I will be up to change the breaks and I will be strongly debating going with the big brake kit which will set me back quite a bit of cash.

If someone is going to keep the car forever there definitely are some awesome things you can do with the vehicle as you immediately let go of resale hesitance. I really like members that paint their cars matte black with matte stripes and dark rims with the ride slammed to the ground. While a paint job is expensive, it really is almost like getting a new car. Add some headers and high flow cats with a corsa/exhaust of your choice if you don't have that and then you REALLY have a new car. I technically could do a big brake kit, get belanger headers and paint the entire car for less than if I sold my viper for 37K and then bought, at invoice, a 61k shelby (66k after taxes). 30K is a lot of coin that could be spent on my current car then going for a new car. The only problem with that is that you really need to have up-front cash for those type of upgrades and I just am not there for those expenses at this point. One day....one day!

I bought my 03 in April 2010, with just under 23,000 on it. Jus turned 31,000 yesterday, so I've put 8000 miles on it in about 3 1/4 years. I would drive it more, but I have two other cars (including a 2007 SRT8 Superbee, which I show more), and I have to stay under 5000 miles a year here in PA to stay emissions exempt, which is a requirement for this car. If I lived in a wamr weather state, and/or non-emissions state, I would probably drive it more. However, cars were meant to be driven. It's not good for them to sit. If you want to look at it, buy a poster - it's a lot cheaper. Plus in my case, I'm turning 50 this year, and with my family history, will be lucky to make to to 70. For all those reasons, I drive the car when I can!

Those high mileage Viper owners are lying anyhow because everyone knows that Vipers automatically crash into deer and have broken suspension arms 5 minutes away from the dealer.

I have to drive a Van most days for work with all my tools in, Ladders and Saws would not fit in a Viper! :D

Weekends are few due to Family commitments so I put around 5k a year on mine. No way I would want to put the dog in the Viper either! :omg:

Just turned 48K on my 96. Would have more but it is a fair weather car and I like having the top off. But I bought it to drive. This is not an investment, it's fun. So I hope to find this thread in a few years and post "soon to break 100k!

Vipers are real, actual race cars... That's why. The other cars you mentioned are street cars, that people race. You won't understand unless you own one. I beat on my car but it also beats me back... can be brutal at times.

I firmly believe 20 years from now that EVERY one who sold their Viper today will be crying.

Or they will be dead. For some folks it doesn't matter how much it is going to be in the future, they're not buying the cars for how much it will be but how much fun it is to drive it.

Buy the car to collect it or buy the car to drive it...it's pretty tough to do both.

PS. Welcome to the viperclub. :D

Race seats don't fit everyone. Reason why most cars don't come with them.

I daily drove my Viper. Except in Snow or rain. Drove my Viper from DC to IL and will take it on long cruises w/o a second thought.... and have a blast driving it the entire trip. Course I'm used to driving 600 rwhp cars that are even more raw and brutal than the Viper. Try driving a 600 HP 70 Mustang on long trips. Makes the Viper ride seem like a Lexus in comparison. :lmao:

Actually the Viper is the Cheapest near Exotic car you can own.. BY FAR. Look up the cost to maintain a GTR is!!! Or Lambo.. crazy insane. Only really expensive maintenance part on the Viper is the tires, but if you go with Nitto or other brands the pain isn't so bad.

Buy the car to collect it..

Usually when people do this... its not them that gets to enjoy it down the road. BUT if you have the mega garage with the room... go for it.

I wish I could drive mine more often but craving the '13 I have to work work work..... First year I put about 2,000 miles and since working hard for the past year I've only had time for a few hundred..... Doing heads and cam this winter so I am sure next summer it will be another few thousand.

I don't post that often, but thought this was an interesting thread. I bought my 01 back in 05' I think with 6800 miles on it. I just went over 41K in it now. I used to drive it much more than I do now. The funny part is, I have had to drive the Viper for the past 3 weeks while my wife's car is in the shop and I thought to myself yesterday, "Why the hell am I not driving this more often!" Love that car.
Plus, I seem to have more problems with it when I don't drive it.

vipers are like a fine wine , they are sipped and enjoyed , not guzzled like cheap beer . that's how i see it driving it once in a while will make you always love it vs. driving it all the time .
