Does anyone else have this problem?

I can fill my tank up all the way up until the gas pump shuts the gas off automatically, and the gauge will never read full. It is like 7/8's full. That doesn't really bother me. However, the gauge will read as if it is nearly empty (practically on the 0/1 line) and when I get gas, I only put like 14 gallons in. What is the deal here? Is it supposed to be FIVE gallons off like that? It has never read correctly, and I am afraid that the one time I actually do run it down to the line, I will indeed run out of gas.

Is this something I can fix, or am I just doomed to getting 14 gallons of gas at a time?

I can never fill my tank all the way either, I have never been able to pin the needle full. The pump shuts off at about 7/8 of a tank also.

My 2002 GTS did the exact same thing as yours. However, my 2000 GTS works normal.

Mine does read full when it is full and empty when it has about 4 gallons left. Since there is no 'low fuel' light, I prefer to have the gauge read empty when there is still some reserve in the tank.

Is this not common on almost every other vehicle out there?
I mean mine goes to the full position, but I also have a bit of a reserve when it shows empty. Like my truck, my wifes Pilot several company vehicles etc etc..

Mine fills all the way. When the pump auto-shuts off, my gauge reads slightly over Full. I usually fill when the gauge is slightly over Empty and it gets me 14-15 gallons. But there are times when the gauge has dipped below Empty and I've filled over 16 gallons.

My 98 does the same thing... I've never put more than 14 gallons in the snake. I don't worry about it too much, as I like to keep it half full or more, just to keep from getting low or risk any sediment getting drawn in the filter. (Don't really know if that helps of not, but it seems logical)

Yeah, the same thing happens to me and I used to get really frustrated. I even thought there was some problem, it would stay on full for about 30-40 miles then shoot down to "E" after about 200 or so miles.

I then actually started calculating my Miles / Gallon and found that I was in normal range, it was just the gas gauge. Accurate gas readings were one area where my Z06 was better.

In my 93 Viper, the place I get gas can make a difference. At some stations, the autoshut off will not allow me to completely fill the tank, whereas others I can add 2-3 more gallons after the autoshut off kicks in. I'm too chicken to risk running out of gas to determine if its the guage or how much gas I'm putting in.

why don't you guys just set the trip odometer and calculate by the number of miles you drive. I know when I start approaching 200 miles it's about time for a fill up.

My PT Cruiser and Dakota don't have this "feature." They work perfectly.

My 2000 is the exact same way Anaconda.
I flip up the ashtray lid when it get to close to E. It remind me to stop fot gas. When your cruising around with a V10 sucking up the gas, it doesn't take long to go through that 5 gal. reserve.

I mean, I would rather have it give you the extra space, than to read like you have a quarter tank, when it was empty. My whole point is four or five gallons is a ummmm TAD off.

You ought to see that needle swing on a track, especially a long track like Sebring...full, empty, 1/2, full, 1/3, 2/3, empty, 1/4, cough, cough, sputter, sputter...Oh No, the horror, the embarassment...

If you think about the MPG we're getting, then it makes sense to be about 4 gallons off, which would translate to about 60 miles left when it's sitting on 0/1. A "normal" car that gets 25-30 MPG could be 2 gallons off with the same "reserve" distance left at "E".

My 2000 GTS reads full when full and empty when I have 3-4 gallons left. So I just let it get down to 0/1 and fill up--and I consistently can fill 15 to 16 gallons.

I was having the same problem until a month ago. I got tired of not being sure how much gas I had so I replaced the sending unit for the gas gauge. The sending unit cost $90.00 and the gauge works the way it is supposed to now. To get to the sending unit that is attached to the fuel pump you have to pull the gas tank. This can be a costly project if you have a dealer do it. I did it myself and it took about 4 hours to remove the tank, and fuel pump and replace the sender. Don't even think about attempting to do this without a service manual. I used to worry about picking up sediment when the tank got low on fuel but my 95 has 58k on it and when I removed the tank the inside was clean as a whistle, no sediment at all.

That's great. Sometimes it feels like all the fuel filter hoopla is overdone.
