Hi,

I'm a new member of this forum, but have been lurking for several months. It's obvious that the members of this forum are true car enthusiasts. Very little negative comments of other makes/models, just appreciation for what each vehicle has to offer, which is how it should be.

I hope to be an "official" member of this forum, but need to find that right Viper. I live in CA and locating the right Viper for me has been a challenge. I've seen and test drove several Gen2s. I'm searching for a GTS. I have my favorite colors...blue or gray, preferably with stripes and a budget of 50K for the right car. Tasteful mods (cat back exhaust, smooth tubes, suspension, wheels, etc.) are all pluses. It's just that there's just very few GTSs available in CA that meet my parameters. There are many Vipers for sale outside of CA, but I'm reluctant to buy one of those. Mainly due to CA strict emissions requirements. I don't mind flying out to inspect an out of state car and have it shipped. But, I'm concerned whether or not it would pass our smog emissions tests. With these older cars, even if no modifications were made, there may be a challenge in passing the emissions testing if the car was not cared for as it should have been.

Are there any CA Viper owners that purchased their car outside of CA? If so, what advice would you provide? Any advice from non-CA owners? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Dean

Good luck on your search, I have my red 99' GTS for sale with most of those mods you mentioned, but I'm in Pa.

Out of state Vipers, with over 7,500 miles on them are pretty easy to bring into California. Just need a visual inspection and they take down the VIN to make sure it is not stolen or has defective title.

I am in San Diego, and owned a Gen II. If you find one locally, l would be happy to look it over for you.

Paul is correct, just make sure it's stock and smog compliant, as would be the case with any Viper you find in CA. Here's an old thread that makes it appear that '98 and later are 50 state compliant, regardless of mileage.

Thanks for the info Paul! I was under the impression that only 50 state compliant vehicles could be registered in CA. I didn't realize that there was a mileage exemption clause. I'm in the Los Angeles area and truly appreciate your offer to inspect one if I find one down your way. May take you up on that. Thanks again!

Thanks for the link harley! For us CA folks, our emissions requirements sure make it more difficult to purchase non-CA vehicles. I guess I shouldn't complain...our smog situation has really improved since I was a kid.
