Always a good question. In 2019 I bought 17" Michelins from a large online retail tire store and they were all already 1 to 1.5 years old. I'm sure probably due to the big gaps in production runs and the low turnover in these 17" Michelins.
To try to deal with the tire issues and make them last...
A Gen 1.5 R/T 10 and a 98 GTS, here. Bought both new. Still have them both. I was also a Chevy 60s Corvette Stingray collector and late 60s Camaro guy in the early 70's. Hated Mopar at that time. Sold them all back in the day and have subsequently seen many of those cars go thru Barretts in the...
My 2 cents.. I've been using the original green in all my vehicles for years and years (except in my Asian cars - I'll use Asian green). It can be a hard to find. NAPA is one place.
I think the key here is that the green is fine in nearly all applications IF you drain and replace it at least...
Was an early VCA member back in the late 90's. Then kids and work happened.. disappeared for about 18 years.. lol. I love hearing from the old timers. Bought my 1st, a brand new 98 GTS in early 1998.. then a 2nd one about 6 months later, a 96 RT/10. Blessed to have both Viper experiences for 23...
Got a gen2 GTS and RT/10 .. I want to keep them original and both require the 17" tires front and rear. It's been gawd awful finding tires over the years. But, with lots of patience (years) and keeping an eye out I've managed to occasionally find them... but barely (Michelin has thankfully put a...
It pains me to think you are parking or having to park your Viper where you are that concerned about a vehicle break-in. Better suggestion: move the heck out of Kalifornia.
I just saw that video on YouTube last night... Pretty cool.
I knew it was filmed somewhere near my neck of the woods judging by the trees and land. I'm nearby, over in Alabama.
Being an early car, with that low of mileage and "if" your intentions are to never sell it... It might be best to keep it all original. Or like Steve e said, only make modifications that are very easily reversible, hanging on to all the old original parts and knowledge.
From a future value...
I have a 96 and a 98... both with no ABS. If I had just one complaint over the years, it was that. NO ABS! It's easy and you're likely to encounter emergency braking situations in a car as fast and tempting as our Vipers.
I've gone thru a couple sets of 17" Michelins on both cars. And in the...
On our Gen 1,2 Vipers with 17" wheels.. (Michelins, which can be and often are unavailable for years - especially the rears) are currently available for about $400 ea for the rears, $360 ea for the front.
That's $1520 plus the ridiculous cost of mounting them which can run up to $100 per tire...
I have a MazdaSpeed3 that had a nail in a tire right at the edge of where the tread meets the sidewall. No tire store would put an internal plug in it because of the puncture location.
So I plugged it from the outside myself. It took two plugs. Lasted about a year before it started a slow...
That they want to sell you new tires. Ha!
My local Dodge service dept. says they typically don't service/repair Dodge vehicles over a certain age, I believe he told me about 12 yrs old.. but they make case by case exceptions for "obviously well maintained" Dodge vehicles, and Vipers.
Totally agree with the comments about the tread getting hard and losing it's stickiness.. you can easily feel the difference between new tires and very old with your bare fingers. Not that anyone might actually go thru the effort and expense, if you can even find a nearby tire company that can...
We should start a column titled "sourcing alternative cheap parts and ingenuous repair work-arounds for thrifty Viper owners". !!
To save money, I'm sure Dodge built these cars using as much stuff as they could from their existing parts inventory... "$10 off a wrecked Dodge Caravan... $250 from...
Thanks Mark for the new link to IPSCO... they have some cool stuff for older Vipers. We definitely need to support them and encourage them to make more stuff.
I have driven on and still have two front Michelin Pilots that old. You might want to avoid excessive high speeds until you've driven on them for awhile and have total confidence in them. I'd keep them aired up to 32psi, in a climate controlled environment away from any source of ozone (like...
A Colorado company called IPSCO is also advertising some Viper parts, including a billet pulley and bracket. Roe racing states that Gen1 (92-96 R/T 10) Viper bracket requires "3 spacers". The Gen 2 apparently does not.
IPSCO doesn't mention any spacers. I'll need to call them for some more...
Was just getting ready to order a billet pulley and bracket for about $175 + shipping. I think I'll definitely try the Rock Auto pulley for under $20! After all, any steel or aluminum pulley that's not plastic will likely be perfectly fine.
I wonder if they also have a steel or aluminum...
I'll share one of my close calls. In my 98 GTS. It was about 45 degrees out as I was driving along an 8-lane surface road. Spotted a modified Supra with a wing up ahead and came up behind him. Traffic was moving along about 50 mph when I decided to pass him on the right side. Down shifted to...
Wonder how many Vipers are no more? How many have been totaled? How many have been so heavily modified and are now impossible to restore to original condition?
With such low production numbers to start with, this information, which is probably impossible/very difficult to get, has a bearing on...
Didn't see the ketchup and mustard RT/10 (red w/yellow wheels - I think they were produced in 1994 or 1995?) or the 96 RT/10 with white wheels and blue stripes (about 315 made)... in Viper Jeff's list.
I bought my white 96 as a 2yr old. The seller offered me either the original white painted...
People always think Viper owners know every other Viper owner in town. Never heard that in a Corvette. In the early years we actually did know nearly every other Viper owner in town.
I was in the VCA early on in the late 90's when I bought a couple of new Vipers. (yeah, I'm an "older guy" now). Got busy with work and kids and lost interest in my 96 Rt/10, 98 GTS and the VCA for over 15 years. In fact, I haven't put a tag on my GTS since 2010!!
Both are gorgeous and run...
The rear tires are currently around $400 each. The front tires are about $360 each... this is for the original 17" wheels. I don't know the cost for tires that will fit a Gen V sized wheel. But the rear 17" Michelin tires can go in/out of production. It took me several years to get the rears...
