Has this engine been tested yet (SAE) officially like the Gen 3 was when it was rated at 510 instead of 500 hp (factory claim)?
I do not think it is a stretch, in that context, to think these engines are putting out 620 instead of 600 claimed hp.
Most manufacturers these days underrate them slightly so that real world results exceed expectations to avoid law suits from buyers (which has happened) among other reasons.

I recall too that when the VCA officers were first allowed to view the new 2008 and an engine dyno for the new powerplant (back in jan 2007??) that the engine dyno numbers actually matched up pretty well with the numbers John is seeing. I seem to recall hp figures in the 613-620 flywheel hp range.

I stick to my earlier statement, John Hennessey is not a credible tuner. Now, did the 08 produce 546 rwhp? It might have, but again, 11.6 at 124-125 mph just doesnt add up in the 1/4 w/ 546 rwhp.
Does John Hennessey make fast Vipers? yes.
Does John Hennessey make fraudulent statements? yes.
When a VCA member gets an 08, takes it to a dyno and to the track...THAT IS when we should really pay attention to the numbers. Screw the rags, the not credible tuners....and go w/ guys who own the cars.
If Dan Cragin or Doug Levin made the claim, it would be much more credible. The most credible numbers will come from US.

Those are very respectable numbers. I will be running my 08 on the Dyno when it arrives. I have been very busy lately and have been meaning to post that I purchased a DynoJet Dyno back in September.

whoaa man your thinking about it all wrong..

The 03-06 SRT10 dynoed 440-450 rwhp and trapped 119-121 with average drivers. with the best drivers at great tracks it trapped 122-124 mph..

Keep in mind that at the same track were a 03-06 srt10 was treapping 119-121 mph a c6z06 was trapping 121-124 mph. At the same great track were great SRT10 owners were trapping 122-124 mph great divers in c6z06's were trapping 125-127 mph...

With 470 rwhp I could barely edge him out with my better driving but from a roll forget about it with equal drivers and 500 rwhp IMHO is needed to pull slightly ahead.

THE 2008 SRT10 NOT ONLY SLIGHTLY BEATS IT BUT HAS TRAPPED ANY WHERE FROM 1.5-3.0 MPH HIGHER IN EVERY HEAD TO HEAD TEST

Were the C6Z06 would trapp 121-124 with an average driver the 2008 SRT10 will trapp 123-126 with an average driver...

Were the best drivers at the best tracks were trapping 125-127 mph in c6z06's the SRT10 will trapp 127-130 mph...

TRUST ME it takes every bit of 540 rwhp for a 3400 pound 3.07 geared viper to trapp 2-3 mph higher than a c6z06...

I never wanted to beleave it but after running a bone stock 455 rwhp c6Z06 around 20 times in my lightly bolted on 470 rwhp SRT10...You need 500 rwhp in a SRT10 to be even or pull on a stock c6Z06.

BTW...Im thinking of selling my 2003 and saving up for a year to get a used 08..

Seriously man...540 PLUS RWHP!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is just freaking sick and I wouldnt even need to drop one dollar on mods..

This is all real, despite the source. Tons of VCA presidents saw 620 on the engine dyno many times. So the 620/540 numbers are right on target.

Interestingly, the source did say there was no power left on the table on the intake side. One might think if there were power there, he wold seize the opportunity for a new product. So, looking at the early full belanger system claims of 50hp, puts your right at the magical ~670 concept car #s just with exhaust.

Sweeeet, where's my darn car!?

Well, unlike our current president, I do listen to other people and can be persuaded to think otherwise when presented with the facts. Twister, you make a very good case. I do think that 600 hp just sounds better for selling points, than say, 622 hp. Dodge may very well have underrated the power, I really hope so. Also, the VIR numbers came in the middle of the hot season, and I am sure numbers during the fall, winter and spring will be much stronger.
The 08 appears to be an extremely formidable machine. Being able to hit 60 w/out shifing, having better tires, over 100 more hp....I really expect to see better numbers with better drivers.

I don't know how MOPAR got 675 but it had to be more than the above. Did they change the compression ratio or did lighter pistons, etc. lead to higher redline and hence higher HP? Did they change the tune (maybe we can't do that right now but they sure could)?
I wish someone from Dodge could tell us.

Me too; Lou Belanger sent me a list of factors to check to get accurate dyno comparisons (use same dyno, shoot for same ambient temp, check for fuel quality/oxygenated fuel, maintain 7 sec dyno pull in 4th etc.) but I would love additional feedback from folks about getting accurate numbers as I have never dynoed a car before.

i believe the VCA guys saw what the saw......but i think the test was rigged. i dont buy it yet. once i see a lot more of them on the dyno putting down similiar numbers, then i'll buy it.

till then, i dont trust ANY manufacturer

I beleave it whole heartedly...My 99 rt10 was rated at 450 crank HP and dynoed 410 rwhp SAE 100% bone stock..

For the 2008 viper to hit 140 mph in 14.1 seconds VS the c6z06's 15.1 seconds at the same location with the same drivers on the same day...It has to have some serious power...

man I want one right now...Too rich for me though

That's why this '08 doesn't need 3.55 gears. It has so much power that only needs 3.33 gears ... but just think about how quick it will be with the 3.33s!

As I've said before, 3.33s might be my first and only mod. :D

It's been a good day today with the 2008. We have been able to try a variety of exhaust combinations, and have the following results to report:

2008 Viper Baseline = 546 rw hp / 515 rw tq

3 inch Stainless Catback Exhaust System = 561 rw hp
(15 rw hp gain over stock)

3 inch Stainless Full Manifold-back Exhaust System with High Flow Cats = 569 rw hp
(23 rw hp gain over stock)

3 inch Stainless Full Manifold-back Exhaust System with No Cats = 575 rw hp / 546 rw tq
(29 rw hp / 30 rw tq gain over stock)

The power gains are pretty even from 3000 to 6000 rpm on all of the above mods.

The factory airbox seems to flow very well and before we tried the exhaust mods we found that there was no power gain by removing the factory air filter and the lower half of the factory airbox. I dont think SRT left any power on the air induction side.

We are headed to the track tomorrow. Pics and videos are coming at some point when I get some time.

I drove this car quite a bit down the track today at our last 60-130 event of the year and I can say its really fast. We didnt time any runs, but rather I gave rides in the car to local Viper owners. I also ran a SRT convertible with a Paxton and about 630 rw hp and was able to beat it by about 4 car lengths twice. I was going to get some 60-130 numbers but after making about 20 hot lap runs giving rides I figured it was pretty heat soaked - but still very fast.

Will get some timed runs on it soon. I will guess that as it sits right now it is a solid 128 to 130 mph car in the 1/4 mile. Maybe some of the local Viper guys will chime in with their impressions from the passenger seat.

I was there and saw it, it's true. The Viper was Jim's the Houston VCA President. Great guy! On every pass he said the 08 would pull on him.

Some updated dyno results from John Henessey over at the viperalley:

2008 Viper: 598 rw hp Uncorrected in 61 deg. Air - Viper Alley - Dodge Viper Forum

Here's a cut and paste:

"The new 2008 Gen 4 motor continues to amaze us. Here are the details:

1. We put 150 miles on the car this weekend. So its a bit more broken in.
2. No addition mods have been made since we dyno'd 575 rw hp last week. That number was gotten with a bit of heat soak.
3. Today we dyno'd the car first thing in the morning. The ambient air temp at the time was 61 deg. F. Humidity was 32%
4. Made 3 pulls, first pull was 598/562, 2nd pull was 592/562 and the 3rd pull was 588/554. All runs were made back to back with no cool down and these numbers are uncorrected.
5. The 598/562 number SAE corrects to 585 rw hp and 550 rw tq.
6. Next thing we will test on the 2008 is a set of stainless steel long tube headers. My guys should have these fabricated and on the car later in the week.
7. I think the 2008 Viper is going to make over 600 rw hp with headers, exhaust and high flow cats.
8. yes we do have a video of the car on the dyno and will upload it as soon as we can. The car really sounds nice."

Discuss amongst yourselves.:) I think it's interesting that John believes that the car couldmake 600 rwhp with headers, exhaust and high flow cats. Using a 12% correction factor I think this works out to 681 flywheel hp. This is close to the 675 hp figure quoted by Chrsyler for the Mopar header, exhaust and intake package quoted on the Viper Concept Coupe first shown at Detroit last January.

1.Great stuff, hopefully the z06 trolls won't be posting over here anymore...
2.looks like the 06 srt with paxton versus 08 debate has been settled....and it looks like the 08 has reeled in not only the current z06, but maybe the gt,430,gallardo and maybe the zr1

Yup, that confirms the numbers from Belanger as well. It looks like many of us will be sitting at 680 really soon. That's a whopping ~200rwhp over my 97 and ~160rwhp over my 03, d*mn thats sweeeet. Lemme see, I guess I can finally retire my 97 and turn the toxick monster into my track car.
