Maybe they added an extra squirrel?!?! :) If so, we'll need a new rule here concerning the use of squirrels and the discussion of said use of said squirrels!

The word was that the engine had made 700hp in testing on an engine dyno, this differs from saying that it would make 700hp in production.

Finding HP on the dyno is very easy. The challenge to DCX is maintaining a sizeable portion of the gains after going through the EPA certification process and balancing that number against warranty claims for the entire driveline.

Exactly right. The number will drop substantially when the engine is built and tuned to production parameters. That is why you are currently seeing numbers from 600 to 650 bandied about.

On the initial design, Lamborghini wanted to completely redesign the V10 and make it DOHC but Chrysler said no because it would cost too much(or so I heard). Now that the Viper has earned market-share, I bet they're going through with this finally. Since Chrysler no longer owns lambo(VW does now), who will redesign the engine? Mercedes-Benz?

DOHC would also not fit under the hood, cost lots more, be more expensive to build and maintain, and mostly add HP at the top end, where the personality of the Viper was a low end torque monster that did not need to be revved to make power.

Same problem with Hemi heads. Makes the engine much taller, with more weight higher up. Standard push rod engine has worked out great. Just put your foot in it and go!

Believe the best step for improvement would be to go to a dry sump. Would free up some more horses, torque, and allow the engine to sit lower to enhance handling, and allow more crush room under hood for new pedestrian impact protection.
