11.62 on street tires, 1.69 60\'!

I met a few friends out at Moroso tonight for some test and tune 1/4 mile runs, had plenty of time to practice launching and ended up with some pretty good times...

runs were done on regular radial street tires.... Michelin Pilot SX's... about 8 months old...... 28 psi hot.... my 1996 GTS has filters, smooth tubes, edelbrock headers and borla cat-back exhaust.... nothing else...

my best runs for the night were my last set of 3 back to back 11.6x runs... also had a 11.7x, 11.8x, 11.9's, 12.0's and a 12.1.....

11.684 @ 120.62 with a 1.707 60'
11.636 @ 120.33 with a 1.690 60'
11.625 @ 120.61 with a 1.701 60'

It was a typical South Florida night.... hot (85 degrees) and humid (85%).... maybe the car will do even better in some cooler weather!

Thanks to Doug Levin for helping me get lined up in the groove for the burnouts, shifting advice... etc.. etc...

Brooks, congrats. I know you were at 12.08 for the longest. How did you manage to cut 1/2 second with no further mods? I'd think you'd have to add 50-75 hp to do it. Were these the tires you need to replace?

Congratulations on some excellent runs!!!

Where are you shifting at? The best run had a slower R/T and 60' than the previous. If you could do those shifts with the previous R/T you would be kickin' a$$.

Ok, what's your launching technique? Did you do the higher RPM/slip the clutch routine or the low RPM/clutch dump/slight bog routine? Us wanna-be racers want to know! Also, how much gas did you have in the tank?

Were you running 93? Also, ive been told not to do a significant burnout on street tires since it has no affect. I assume you did likewise or just a quick one to get the gunk off.

Steve... its possible to cut ET's quite a bit with a good launch, good shift points, and quick shifting... I have no more power than I did before.... these were the tires.... I have a flatspot somewhere....

Shifting.... to start out, 1-2: 5900, 2-3: 5800, 3-4: 5400...... later on I changed the 3-4 shift to 5700, and picked up some ET and about 1 MPH....

Gas... I stopped by the gas station near the track... the gauge read a little below the 0 mark.... I put in 7 gallons.... the gauge read about 1/2 tank when I started, and I had about 1/8 when I was done.... 93 octane....

Burnouts.... tire pressure was at 28psi hot..... first 4 runs I didn't do any burnout.... short times were 1.85 to 1.95... with ET's ranging from 11.8 to 12.1, pulled right up and ran.... I then started to do some burnouts before running... I went around the water, backed up in the groove, right up against where the water was.... revved up to around 5000 and let go..... tires would spin, car would slowly start moving forward.... then the tires would slowly start to hook, until the car would lurch forward forcefully... the burnouts really seemed to help.....

Launching... after doing the burnouts, the car was hooking up much better.... I started out at 2000 rpm..... feathering the clutch out as I applied the throttle.... if the car hooked, there was almost no spin...... car would jump, then bog very slightly.... by the end of the night I was launching at around 4000 rpm..... with short times down to 1.69-1.701...... we had the track rented... only 8 cars running.... so there was plenty of time to play with launch rpm's..... there was very fine line, ~200rpm, between hooking up well and spinning out of control.... I had few runs that I just aborted because the tires just lit up at launch....

as for reaction times..... I do understand what green means.... doesn't mean anything when your not racing anyone, as the slips show.... I was going for ET....

Yes do tell, how did you get those times? and how did you run on a Tuesday? track rental? I'm planing on going tonight if it don't rain. Will be my 2nd time, if I can hit a low 12 I will be happy. I'm getting 2.1X 60' times

yea, thats me, Brooks W....

still haven't beaten my best time of 11.4 in the FD.... but I haven't run the Viper on slicks "yet"....

my best time the the FD on street tires was 12.3 @ 118, so the 11.6 @ 120 is giving the FD a good beating on street tires....

I'll go on record and say that's the best times I have seen for a GTS with exhaust I have ever seen, do I stand corrected?

For what's it worth your running to the tenth of what Road and Track did in a McLaren F1 at an as tested price of $1,131,120.
Toss that out to the neighbours!

with slicks would you think 11.3x are in order?

Great Runs, very consistent, shows they weren't flukes. I have always advocated the high RPM launch and feather, more proof over the bog and stab. I have the same mods. Put on the slicks if you have HD shafts and use the same technique, should go 11.0000000s. Mine went 11.05 @ 124 I went 11.68 on the DOTs

Funny how people will find something to nitpick!

Uhhh, guys, I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but I don't think slicks are going to buy Brooks very much in terms of ET. With his mods, low 1.6's is about the best to be expected on ET streets. If anyone has different experience, please chime in here. My best short time to date on the ET streets is 1.62 at Pomona. Now that Pomona is no more for public racing events, I am relegated to tracks with less traction, so I'm sitting in the 1.68 range now. I'm eager to hear of someone running better than a 1.6 short time with just headers and exhaust on ET streets.

If 1.6 is the best short time to be expected with his mods on ET streets, then figure Brooks will gain two tenths ET, for an 11.4. Not bad, but not an 11.0.

Anyway, I'm not trying to take anything away from the accomplishment of a 1.69 short time on the Michelins, and in fact I offered my kudos back in August. It's just that Brooks has gotten so freakin' good at launching on street tires that he's not going to buy much by putting on the ET streets!

I'm thinking true quarter mile slick, no DOT streets, would bring in the 11.3 range, agree 100% that anything legal is not going to help much, the man has it optimized!

Apples to oranges but I pulled 1.8x on stickies to mid 1.5x on true slicks (off the bottle) in my lowly 5.0 days....

Lots of armchair thinking considering the snow on the ground here, lots of time to do it, great runs, bottom line....

Since we are talking about 60' times on Pilots I thought I'd show you my 1.45 again

I have not been able to back this up yet, so it could simply be called a fluke. But I run this slip. And it all looks normal until the last 320'. I wish I knew what happend but I just don't have enough experince yet.

The point is that it is possible to get Pilots to hook.

Hey, for point reference, I'm looking at a time slip for a run I did last summer at Carlsbad. The time slip is:

R/T......... .706
60 ft....... 1.656
330 ft...... 4.810
1/8 ET...... 7.437
1/8 MPH..... 95.02
1/4 ET...... 11.546
1/4 MPH..... 123.12

(Regrettably, this netted me a loss by .315 to a blown LT1 Camaro, but hey the kid has a strong running car!)

Anyway, times look similar up to the 1/8th. Sorry no 1000 ft -- the Carlsbad track was built at the dawn of time, and hey, you should be thankful if the timing equipment is working at all. MPH is a bit different at the 1/8th, but I'm guessing that's shifting technique. For sure, something happened to you in the 2nd half of the track. You have no idea what? You were on course for a very solid mid-11 run at the 1/8th.

The thing I like about ET streets vs. Michelins is that you can get them to hook every time without a lot of hassle/finesse. I know, you probably think of my as lazy because I said that. I am impressed by guys who can get ridiculously low 60' times on Michelins though!
