1996 RT/10 Muffler question

I used the search feature but didn't come with anything; does any vendor make, or does anyone have a straight muffler delete pipe for the 96 RT/10? According to the manual, it just looks like you have to loosen the 2 band clamps, and push the muffler back slightly to remove it. I don't want to leave the pipes just hanging there with the exhaust not exiting the rear of the vehicle. I know a lot of members have upgraded their exhaust systems, sometimes more than once, and maybe someone has a set of used straight-pipe(s) to replace the muffler laying around that they might want to get rid of. An economical way of getting the exhaust slightly louder? Who knows, that remains to be seen..........

Your Viper is a bit unique for the fact that it does not have side sill resonators and only the rear muffler. So if you remove the rear muffler and use something like the ones on this page Online Shopping - Home you won't have any mufflers - just cats. It's nice to have a system that uses factory style clamps and not "crush clamps" so you can remove easily if you want. Since they are made to match up to Gen 2 resonators there may still be a little bit of work to connect these rear assemblies to your cats.

The borla system and mopar system delete the rear muffler but will add side sill mufflers that you do not have today.

Cheapest is to have a muffler shop fabricate a rear assembly. Personal choice.

btw. All gen 2 Vipers have both side sill resonators and the rear muffler.

Marv S. Thanks for the link; those are some nice exhaust kits; not sure I want to spend the $$$ right now at this point. A muffler shop custom fab may be the way to go. I was just checking to see if someone actually had an assembly already made up that they were no longer using and were looking to get rid of. I will continue to research accordingly........

Cheapest and best way is to keep your exhaust in tack and change the cats. You'll gain sound and some extra HP along the way. You can go catless too but that depends on your local laws and personal choice. Not to mention you'll get an extra bonus "Much reduced heat coming from your side sills"

If you had a white 96 like me you would have already known what that heat does to your sill color. I've also seen it on some silver cars too. Heat is not good!

If you haven't made the modification yet, you may want to pm skeetatcha. We recently cut the front mufflers and cats off his '96 GTS and ran straight pipe from the auto parts store. Got a better sound and for the time being, it's a cheap upgrade until he can buy the full exhuast system.

Total cost was about $40-$60 for the pipe. There are several threads on here somewhere that explain the procedure. Simply remove the side sills and hack off the muffler and cat. Weld the pipe in place and use some exhaust tape so no leaks. Im sure not everyone is going to agree that this is a good idea, but it's only temporary.

Thanks for the suggestions; with our 2nd baby on the way, I'm trying to minimize spending wherever possible. Those ideas are probably the best way to go, however I just wanted to remove the rear muffler where it connects to the pipes with the band clamps, and replace with a straight pipe from that point back. It would definately be very inexpensive with minimal time investment. Not sure I want to go the side sill/cat removal upgrade at this point, but we'll see what happens. Not too many speed shops in my area, and I was hoping to find someone who had was I was looking for just laying around gathering dust, so we could both benefit from it. It's not a big deal either way, just looking for a little louder exhaust with minimal effort and $$$$...........

I took my car to a muffler shop, had them cut off the rear muffler and replace with straight pipe. They then cut the tips off the muffler and welded them onto the straight pipe so the car retained its stock look. Total price: $125. The car sounded great! I've since added headers and deleted the cats, so its even louder now (its really too loud on deacceleration), so I'll prob add a aftermarket muffler or HF cats sometime in the future.
