I am coming up on 500 miles and plan to open it up a little shortly thereafter. I hear all kinds of stuff about changing the oil the 1st time @ 500 miles, 3000 miles, etc. Would somebody in the know provide some solid advise please?

Mark at Woodhouse states that the first oil change for an 08 should be done at 500 miles, then 3000 there after.

I am going to go with the 500. What is the correct part nuber of the filter for an 08? I don't have a lot of confidence in the local dealer so I want to make sure I get everything right.

Got the correct part number, 5038041AA for an 08, thanks. I want to confirm that the drain plug is torqued at 25 ft/lbs for an 08. Also should the new filter be filled with oil before installing it?

I think Herb was just being conservative with the 200 mile figure; that is what I did on my 08 but I did 500 on my 2006. I think the main point is just to get the initial oil that will be filled with metal shavings and other contaminants out of the engine once it has some time on the road to avoid some wear in the engine. I can't imagine a huge differebnce between changing at 200 versus 500 however.

Vipers come with synthetic oil correct? Then why the need for such short oil change intervals? I run Mobil 1 15,000 mile extended performance in my truck and change that every 10k and in my Z06 if follow the onboard oil life monitor which works out to every 7-8k depending on how I drive it. If I have an HPDE I change it prior. I've had Blackstone test my oil samples and they show perfectly fine. I run Amsoil 5w40 in the Z06... even after 80k the car still put down 436 rwhp on the stock heads with a moderate cam and bolt-ons. I'm guessing very few put miles on the Vipers... and I'm sure this will illicit "it's cheap insurance" responses
