Anyone else find it amazing that a Viper that will be at least 115K ( gas guzzler, sales tax, delivery etc and NO options) is positioned as the entry level car. The poor mans Viper. What recession?

I think a lot of these 2013's are going to end up overseas. Anything new has a big demand to those with overseas money. I don't think they'll be much excess inventory sitting for the first 18 months.

Sorry boys, but I am out of the running for a new GEN V. Love the new GTS but it is clear, it is not the car for me as I just can't pay that much. Base SRT seems in line which is great but GTS seems just out of line. I mean if a full load GTS is probably around $145K (as I would want and option it full load anyway; standard SRT does not appeal to me as I would always be wanting the GTS anyway so would never be happy with the damn thing), for $20K more above that number, you could walk in to a slightly used Scuderia with under 3,000 miles that it will still be worth what you paid 10 minutes after driving it off the lot as depreciation is already taken. Or for that money you can get a high mileage Ford GT for $170k and it will still be worth that. The new GTS will drop $20k like every other Viper did the past few years right off the lot so while a beautiful car the new GTS is just too rich for me at this point in my life. Can't justify the new costs compared to what else is out there used. The way the GEN IIIs and others Gens dropped in price so dramatically, it is just not smart money, which is a shame. Even though it is apples to oranges, the new GT-500 starts to look like a bargain which I am sure many others will see as well.

Looks like I am holding out hope for the other car Ralph is working on right now; the SRT Cuda. Much smaller than the current Challenger and with 4 seats. Someone make sure to ask him about the SRT Cuda at VOI12. Hopefully they can keep that car in the $70K to $85K range when it comes out. Could swing that amount but new GTS Viper, nope. That dream went up in smoke!!!!!

Coloviper, I can understand your point. I'd want all the bells and whistles too, and $145K is pretty darn steep. Don't know if I would ever be happy with the "base" model -- need to wait until all the specs, etc., come out to decide though.

This months Car and Driver has a page on the 2015 SRT Barracuda. Pretty radical body style (the car shown is in purple) and is to replace the Challenger. SRT is to decide early next year if they will build a vert version. Should be interesting to see what they ultimately offer as far as powertrain options.

Colo -- can you afford a used Ferrari. I looked at a lambo till i found out you need to change egear clutches every 4000-8000 miles max. Parts are crazy price. IF you want a 2013 GT500 i can line you up a good deal on one, I was going to buy till i saw the number 662 hp and only 11.8 quarter mile does not add up. Interior not to my liking. Plus had one here parked next to a 1998 Viper, no one stopped to look at Ford, everyone having pictures taken with viper. IF I am spending 70,000 on a mustang i would get a 2000-2009 ACR which does quarter mile 11.5. OR hold off for a used Gen V. Personally I am struggling should i get a new Viper or 2010 ACR.

Mike,

I think you hit it right on the button. I have three Ferrari owners who are getting new Vipers, and that is their main concern with the cars they have now. Love the looks of the Ferrari, who doesn't , but the upkeep is a bit on the high side. They love the looks of the new Viper and are excited about a super car with relatively low maintenance costs.

Colorado Viper -- not really that many upgrades on a GTS to run it up to where you are surmising. I think the bulk will come in under 130 with some a bit over , but when the main upgrades are a track pack, upgraded interior and 18 speaker Harmon Kardon Stereo, should not be that excessive IMHO.

We have quite a few orders for the SRT, since so much is standard there, with the big interest seemingly in the track pack and the middle level seats.

Respectfully,
Bill Pemberton

This Gen V pricing information merely shows that if you want to run with the "Big Boys", there is a price of admission.

I think the pricing is decent, not cheap, but within range.

The real last question will be performance. With the power-to-weight ratio between the F12 and the Aventador, I expect insane numbers.

Before I plop money down, I'd like to see where it sits with respect to that - well - and see one in person.

$100k is a bit steep to drop, sight unseen, imo.

I have said it before and I will say it again. With the price of this car $100,000 PLUS, the customer service at the local dealers is going to be questionable. You can not expect the level of care and personalized service from a sales, service department and a tech who just got done changing the oil in a Dart and then goes to work on your Viper. This is the exact reason I sold both of my GTR's. I had one of the very first 2009's and the paint was coming off the wheel at 29 miles. I took it back to the dealer and they said oh well. I called the GTR hotline and within an hour the dealership was at my house taking the wheel off to send into Nissan for a new one. Again a dealership selling Versa's and GTR's is not a good mix. NOW my Porsche and Ferrari dealership experience, that is a WHOLE different ball game. I have owned 4 Porsche Twin Turbos and 2 Ferrari's. EXCEPTIONAL service from the dealerships.

For this kind of money, Viper and SRT is going to need to be proactive with the dealerships about the level of service and the waiting area they need to provide with these NEW LEVEL of customers. Ferrari and Lambo customers are not going to want to be sitting in a dealership service waiting room with a mother with screaming kids getting her mini van worked on and a old man with a smokers cough getting his 300 fixed watching DNA tests on The Maury Show. This is a WHOLE new territory that Dodge is walking into.

I will wait a year or so and see if these dealers are going to put the commitment level into Viper. So far NO DEALER in a 50 mile radius of my house has stepped up to the plate to be a Viper dealer. Time will tell...:eater:

Okay, I finally got some time to make a post so here it goes. :)

Look, the Aventador or any Lambo is NOT by any means capable of running around a race track comfortably for sessions at a time. Motor Trend, as much as it pains for me say it, is right when they tested it in that 'super-duper-wow-the-BRZ-is-slow' challenge. Lamborghini, no matter what they can do in real world racing, (Ex. Murcie R-GT) will not be know for road course kings. They are brute, monstrous street cars and don't get it wrong, I love Lamborghini's. The Murcie SV and Superleggera are amazing, I think the Supperleggera might be the best track car they've ever made. I've even met with Valentino Balboni twice, super nice guy BUT that's where I stand on that. Lambos are great street cars capable of killer Twin Turbo setups.

As for Ferrari (I don't care if they ban me from Maranello for this) but they can depreciate fast. They sure do burn alot faster to the ground than 90% of the exotics on the market...that's for sure. The last entry level Ferrari I really admired was the 360. Just about every current super Ferrari (F40, F50, Enzo, FXX) are absolute favorites, no doubt.

My biggest gripe about the current super/exotic car market? Everything is starting to look like freakin' Hot Wheel cars. That's great, for kids, not for me though. The Aventador, F12, FF, just seem...well ugly, maybe I'm just getting older and yes even the Viper kinda leave my brain wondering if all of them had been designed as a 1/64th diecast by Mattel first rather pinned by an actual designer.

However, That six vent hood is growing on me. I never made it to NYIAS so I never saw the car in person, I always have bad luck getting a press pass. I think the angles that the magazine photographers took make it look completely amazing rather than the cell phone twitter pic and I know, chances are I probably won't own any of the cars I listed. I'm an enthusiast but then again I would hope most of us are, we are talking about cars and overall would really like to see the company improve as a whole.

When VOI12 was announced it was going to be on the east coast, in Charlotte, I knew I had to go somehow. I have some good friends on here that really helped me out, I saved up some serious money after working month after month. It's just 6 more work days away, I don't care about missing NYIAS anymore and can't wait to go. I'm glad I could take part in the road leading up to it, posting the twitter info, answering questions. I haven't had this much fun discussing about a single car in years.

I wouldn't buy into the Cuda snippets in magazines. It's fictional hype as of now, a TON of rumors out there but nothing was mentioned about a 'Cuda' over the weekend considering the dealer conference just occurred. The biggest news from Vegas was the description of a yellow SRT Dart prototype with a carbon fiber hood. That was it. Maybe they were all told to keep quiet, 66 new models is quite the bunch!

OH! and there was one last thing I wanted to bring up. Do you guys remember this drawing? I think it came out of Viper Magazine. Would the car look better with a gen II style front end?

I'll shut up now. :smirk:

You know, it's a bit annoying that this type of news is broadcasted on a free public twitter site and not taking time to share the news initially on the Viper Club of America who actually pay $ to be a member and at minimum on the Members Only section. Sure at least members had the opportunity to check out the concept car at a VOI event, but even stuff like this could be exposed within the club first to read exclusive news and updates, you know.... it just makes you feel special...

I can't be bothered to do the twitter thing.. maybe that's my problem. Maybe the VCA could figure out how to capture and post updated tweets from Ralph and post them, synchronize some type up updated information on-site blog that's being broadcasted.

Rant off... can't wait to hear what the prices are... so for time being, I'll ask my niece to search twitter for the latest updates on Viper prices or hood louver pics...

Cheers
Mike

I thought it was cool that the VCA created and is testing out a new section showing the latest Twitter feeds such as from Ralph, I actually like it, there's lots to sift through, but more information is much better than less.

Thank you VCA & especially Marv for listening to a member like myself who stirs the *** sometimes! :2tu:

Mike Adams;

I am not looking at another Ford or Shelby GT-500 either, just wanted to say that there is a big difference between a $65K-$70K GT-500 new and the $100K+ Options SRT Viper new. Again not apples to apples cars but some that have some money but not big bucks in the bank will make that comparison and make their decisions accordingly.

My comment on the Ferrari or other used exotics in that price range is that regardless of the maintenance costs, the car purchased used with the first and even second hit of depreciation already taken will not take that big hit off the lot compared to a new SRT Viper based upon Viper past history. Fully agree that the maintenance costs can and do add up on some of those cars. Truth be told, I can not afford a used Ferrari or the one I would want as that would be an F430 or Scud given the maintenance on that model is way, way less compared to a 360 with that timing belt issue and 355s with their issues. Yes you have to replace clutch after time but I know plenty of Ferrari owners who get many more miles out of their clutches, etc. than what Ferarri recommends. The suggested maintenance is just that suggested. Unless it really needs it, throw a lot of that suggested maintenance period out the window.

As frustrating as all this stuff can be and while it is true you have to pay to play or run with the big dogs, it is still the reality of smug comments where people rub it in your face that you don't have the money to step up another $40k over the outgoing Viper to continue on with the brand in GTS style. Not what I expected from certain members but the new pricing is really showing the Viper community going down two very distinctive paths. Those that can and those that can't. In time, I will probably really regret selling my GEN III Coupe which I bought new and enjoyed for almost 6 years. I got real good money for it when I sold it a few months ago, but I was just able to get into it when I bought it after selling my company and right now just not seeing where I am going to get back to a position to get what I in a Viper. Really like all the Gens but the GEN V GTS addresses all the spartan, cheap plastic BS I really didn't like about the previous GENs.

In the end, at least my health is coming back slowly and stablizing. I still have my 95' Saleen S351R BASF Mystic Edition Speedster with the 408 stroker and 684 hp / 738 lbs-torque for fun and my 69 Mustang Mach 1, along with our daily Cayenne Turbo Ss. Would still like to move on the Mach 1 and get back into a Viper but nothing to my liking, nor an opportunity has materialized to make that work.

We are just trying to start our family (very late in life - 39 years old) and we finally have nothing but a mortgage payment left. Just can't justify stretching it too far for a new car and the new SRT Viper pricing is well too far for us considering I would not be happy with the base car, non-GTS. Just the way I am.

Anyway enough of my whinning about money, or the lack here of. Truly wish I came from it, or had a big family trust fund to pull from but had to earn everything in life the extreme hard way, unfortunately to the detriment of my health and well being. Just tired of throwing it away anymore after having to work so hard and need to be a bit smarter moving forth. Lot depreciation just *****. Should have found a way to free up the extra cash and bought a Ford GT when some were selling for $150K a few years ago. Such is life!

I did a bit of research and I do not see the issues that people mention about the Viper not holding its value. I searched for 2009 vipers on autotrader and the cheapest was asking $67K. That is a 31% drop in value from MRSP of 97K (assuming standard options with stripes).
Comparing that to my 09 C63AMG, Cheapest one online is $36K and MSRP was 65K. (56K was base but with standard options, average is 65K). That is a drop of 45%. Even if the one for sale at $36K was barebone, this still translates to a 36% loss.
I know that most people do not pay MSRP but I believe that the discounts on the Viper was much larger than the AMGs.
Finally looking at Ferraris which hold their values the best in the sports car arena, the cheapest F430 was a spyder at 183K. Options list is endless but let's assume a $250K MSRP, that is a 27% drop and you know you do not get discounts off that price.
Please enlighten me as the way I see it, the Viper is holding its value very well.
