300 Km/h..it\'s a blast but will never do again on open road

Well it is done..I made a bet with the largest AmCar magazine here in Norway that I was going to push my GTS over the 300 Km/h mark, and it is done..but will never try this again on an open road. It all happened in Germany on the Autobahn. My wife and I was driving down the autobahn at speeds between 220 and 240 Km/h, and I was getting tired of being passed by gray haired old guys in big Mercedes and Beemers. By the way, the Viper is actually very nice to drive at this speed, and performs really well. I was just waiting for the right moment, and in the late afternoon my wife started to hang her head on her shoulder, i knew my time was coming. And yes, after a while I could hear the well known little "snoring" sound, she was falling asleep, and there were hardly any trafic on the roads at this time. A quick little prayer was said, the gear knob was pulled back in fourth and the pedal found it's way all the way down..wow you talk about adrenaline starting to pump through my bodyparts. Everything happened extremely fast, and I had a hard time following the speedo and the road as I was going through the gears. It was a little scary watching cars flying past me as I climbed up on the speedo, but there were a couple of other cars trying to hang on..passing 270..a BMW had to let go..275..a Porsche had to let go..280..another Porsche trying to hang on..285..the Porsche had to let go..290..all alone..295 and finally after a loooong stretch, the needle was bearly passing the 300 mark, and that was enough for me cause I had finally broken the 300 mark I had set myself to do. I was slowing down and at about 270 Km/h I saw a sign "Gasstation 1000meters", but that gas station just flew past me before I could stop, and I realised then how fast I was really going. Yes it was fun and an incredible adrenalinekick, but it was also crazy and I will never try this again with a passenger. The funniest was watching the eyes in a policecar as I passed at around 270..they were BIG :ooo:

Silver State Challenge, Gold Rush, etc. Work your way up to unlimited. With enough safety equipment and a few mods. 300km/h is fairly easy.

I disagree,

The STUPID thing to do is tell him how to live HIS life, especialy considering this was done leagaly on the autobahn.

You need to purchase a hybrid honda, and go make driving laws elsewhere.

He was in GERMANY on the AUTOBAHN! It is totally legal and happens everyday over there. If more drivers in America got a clue, we could do the same thing over here safely! :2tu:

Re: 300 Km/h..it\'s a blast but will never do again on open road

not if they come from new jersey... I wish america had an autobahn style road system, it would be alot safer considering EVERYONE who would apply for a liscense would be state mandated to attend driving school and i mean real driving school none of this six hours crap, also the average speed of most cars on the autobahn is in excess of 120 mph, and that alone is freaking fast.unless you go to a densely populated part of the "Bahn" where the speed limit generally 65-80 MPH. Also take account that msot people on the autobahn are used to driving near cars rediculously fast, hence the left being the fast lane and why companys will test on it ( mercedes did a few 300mph runs on it )and why he didn't get pulled over by the cops.also the autobahns fatal accident rate is dramatically less than the american interstate death rate.the ultimate downside would mean that drivers liscenses would be more expensive. if i am correct, in germany it is in excess of 1000 dollars

This is a good debate. I think it would have been wiser to try it without the wife involved. I'm all for breaking speed records but I think leaving the wife at home would have been the best course of action. To each, his own, however. You got the nerve that I don't have so I admire you.

This is quite normal in Germany, if you drive too slow you will get passed by a bus or even get a ticket!
It is quite safe on these roads.
With all this speeding going on, can someone please explain why the USA has approx. 4 times the population of Germany but 6 times the road toll?

Don't try that one in LA or you will be getting a striped suntan!

Re: 300 Km/h..it\'s a blast but will never do again on open road

This is my experience on the Autobahn :

3989Tirol_Jun_20040002_klein.JPG

Nothing to write home about. Very crowded and full of maniacs taking their underpowered cars beyond the limit. It is not an environment where you want to race the locals.
Lately we've been having a lot of deadly accidents caused by the so called 'Autobahnraser' (people who buy Porsches or BMWs to drive the sh*t out of them on the highway). Quite the stir going on in Germany.

There are quite some misconceptions about the Autobahn :
- About half of it has a speedlimit. When it has a speedlimit, you can be sure there will be a police camrera;
- It is not a racer's dream, it's simply overcrowded;
- The locals do not have the best machinery. Most high powered Mercedeses, Porsches, BMWs are sold in the US. They do have a tendency to drive their cars at 110% though.

I personally set most of my speed records in the US. Just depends on where you live. All I had to do in the past was take my car or my bike East out of Portland and hit the high desert :2tu:

Taking a Viper to Europe has been a major dissapointment. The roads are too small and too crowded
2 gears would have been enough !
Can't wait to be back in the US from that perspective.

Hi Neil,

It took quite a long stretch of road to do it, and the needle was pretty stuck when it finally passed 300..so in my opinion with my Viper that was about the limit, but with another Viper it could be a different story..try it someday..alone :2tu:

Yes I agree with Yves there..been on the autobahn many times and best time to drive fast and be resanable safe is in the early to late evenings, depending on where in Germany you are. But almost no matter what speed you are going at, somebody will pass you, with both wife and kids in the car..and by the way 2BADD 4U, when I told my wife what I had done, her reply was "why did you not wake me up..next time you will", she would most likly have done the same with me asleep in the car.

Oh by the way..if you ever are on the autobahn, you wil for hundred percent see a lot of funny and stupid things, and this one was..next day we were slowly gaining on this car going about 200 Km/h..this car had a bicycle rack on the back with a bike on, and the front wheel on this bike was spinning at some really fast speed. I told my wife that this would be fun to see who this person was, and as we were coming up on the side of this car, we could to our great surprice and amusement, see that it was a little old grayhaired lady hunched over the steeringwheel, and with big old coca cola bottle glasses she looked like somebody out of a cartoon..yes you can get a lof of fun on the autobahn, and don't be afraid of loosening up a little and have some fun..try it everybody..life is to short anyway.

more power to you! I've not driven the AB, but rented a car in Italy a couple years back and drove their autostrada, where I was amazed at the steady stream of Alfa Romeos, Bimmers, and Mercedes that blew by me in my little Fiat!
I finally did the km/mph conversion and realized I was going 80-90 mph at the time! (all the little Fiat felt comfortable doing, or I'd a been faster!)

 Sounds like you went during the busy tourist/vacation time of the year. Also what parts did you go to????

That has a lot to do with speed. Close to a big city and you can forget any speed records. Just like the USA or any other part of the world, during an accident or rush hour won't have you going anywhere fast either.

My parents live in Germany so I visit all the time. 160-180mph is very easy and possible over there on the street. There are only a few places that you could actually get to 200mph safely! :headbang: Otherwise even that is to fast over there. :2tu:

I imagine that when there is an accident it must be very messy. Two cars locking up at 150 MPH...must be nothing but little bits to clean up.

Re: 300 Km/h..it\'s a blast but will never do again on open road

Yes I have seen many pilups of cars, but after my experience they are mostly caused by large trucks, and the bahn will back up for miles in just a matter of minutes. But credit to the German drivers, even at high speed they manage to stop safely before a hugh pilup happens..they are used to this and seems to always be alert and ready.

As far as places to go fast on the bahn, there are many places you can do this. Last year I was all over Germany on business almost every moth, and on the route between Hamburg to Berlin and Berlin to Munchen, you have many wide open stretches of autobahn you can safely exceed speeds of 250 Km/h..and these routes are pretty much free from trafic in the evenings.

Re: 300 Km/h..it\'s a blast but will never do again on open road

The autobahn is NOT crazy. It's the same as here in most cases. I haven't been to Germany for a few years now, but the roads are usually in GREAT condition, 3-4 lanes are pretty normal too.
yes, if you are around a large city, then traffic ***** just like it does here during certain times of the day.
But just like here, you can find a NICE stretch of safe road, w/o much traffic late at night, or especially during the weekends.
Then it's all good! :2tu:

Safely?? There is no such thing. If the road has "no speed limit" you are at the mercy of the "idiots" on the road. If someone if coming up on someone doing 120, and passes how are they to expect the car, which is behind them in the passing lane is going 190!?!?!?!?!?!

No one should go that fast on a ***** road with others. My opinion. Trash my opinion agree with it, it will not change!

They know how to drive, and would either not be in the passing lane, or would move after seeing a speck in the rearview mirror of something behind them in the passing lane.

Re: 300 Km/h..it\'s a blast but will never do again on open road

Well I can see that I have most likely made some people angry with my autobahn experience, and some people seem to understand that Europeans have a different drivingculture..we have to understand that German's and other countries over here, grow up with a different atitude regarding speed than US does. I have personally lived in the US for 16 years..from 1985 to 2001..and have learned that American drivers are much more defensive drivers than most of the Europeans. In the US I would always watch the trafic way up ahead of me since I never felt safe about the trafic picture in front of me. Many times have I had a car just pull out in front of me as I was coming in the outside lane to pass, and had to slam the brakes to avoid a crash or cause a crash myself. This is very rearly you will find on the autobahn, since people are most of the time aware of the trafic sistuation behind, because of the high speed cars are traveling with. They are very good at using lightsignals with both headlights and turnsignal lights, and will most of the time start to signal a lanechange way before they actually do so. If there is a traficsituation up ahead of you, you will know this because most cars will turn on their flashing warninglights to inform you that something has happened up ahead of you. I guess this is part of our trafic culture difference. Another thing is also that a drivinglicense here can easily cost you thousands of $$$$, since the trafic schools have very strikt regulations from the goverment about the driving edjucation, and you will have to pass many different drivingtests to get your lisence. And I think that this is also a factor in how people use more caution on the road to avoid accidents..I am NOT saying that we are better drivers than the Americans, but I believe with our higher edjucation level on our student drivers, we create a safer traffic picture on the roads..myself and other friends from over here have been quite surpriced at how easy it is to obtain an American drivers license, but again I am not for lots of goverment regulations..we have enough of them over here. Just trying to make a point that high speeds on the Autobahn in places were this is possible, is not at all unsafe if you have a car built for it and are using sound judgement, and that most of the cars traveling at high speeds are built for it. But you will always find, no matter what country you are in, that there will be people driving unsafe with cars that were never made for high speed..and most of the time these are the ones making the traficpicture dangerous for the rest of us.
