Since my last build didn't end up very well (consumed oil like crazy), it's time to redo it. The motor was pulled earlier this year and I just began conversations with the machine shop to start the new build. In our initial conversations, they were thinking 650 is too high a goal. Seeing as how the motor is stroked and bored (510 CI now), what all else do I need to do to reliably get to 650 RWHP?

Here's the spec so far:

- Billet main caps
- New pistons and rods (i'll have to look up the manufacturer, can't remember now)
- Complete port and polish on heads
- T&D RR
- Monster cam (I want to scare little kids when we're finished :D)

I'm not versed on building engines, and I'd like to get more involved this time around. Is the stock fuel system going to be ok? What else should I look at since the motor is pulled?

What you need is cylinder heads, with factory castings I doubt you can even come close. A set of stryker heads is a must, raise compression, make sure you have the engine management required to pull this off, and the fuel system to support your goals.

What did the car dyno prior to pulling the motor? What are the flow numbers on the heads before/after?

If I remember correctly, with the stock top end and built block, the car made 480 rwhp and 560 rwtq.

From what all I have heard and what was just confirmed by GG, the heads are going to be the limiting factor here.

Will titanium valves make any difference?

If you want 650 rwhp N/A out of a Gen 2 you'll need Styker heads.

The stock castings are good for about 620 in my experience.

The Gen 3 guys are luckier. Those stock castings will make 650.

How close are the Gen 3 heads to Strykers in potential? And what about Gen 4 heads? Supposedly its not hard to adapt them to the earlier cars.

The last engine I built with Greg Good Heads did 627whp/637wtq. You will need to do some serious work on the stock intake manifold to get your 650.

It depends on how much work you put into them. All three can make great power.

I'd say in a boost application the Strikers would get the nod for their thicker deck and extra cooling capacity.

Unfortunately work has been keeping me busy this week so I haven't had any time to look into anything just yet. With that, is there anything else I should look into doing while it is out like Dave's bracket, etc?

As a bit of an update to this, we are still waiting for the crank to come back from being nitrided, but the other aspects are moving nicely. New titanium valves are in and weigh about 38 grams less per valve. Head has been ported and we are running about 25% more CFM than stock.

I just wish this industry was better at keeping deadlines . . .

Wow, nice. That's the highest NA RWHP figure I've seen.....I'm sure Stryker race heads, ported by Greg with a killer cam and........ might be higher, but 654 a stout performance indeed.

How fast were you spinning it to get that HP peak?

Just trying to figure out how much street vs race your set up is.

I hope you can get 650rwhp, LS7's can get like 630rwhp with heads/cam.

I got 634 na rwhp on my old Gen 2 GTS with the following done by a combination of RSI, TNT, and Hennessey. 1.7 T&D rockers, custom heads and race cam, larger throttle body, carbon intake box, custom headers, hi flo cats and no mufflers. I would think DC motorsports, Dallas motorsports etc. could hook you up with your needs.

I'm sure if we truly went balls out, we could make it. However, another aspect of this build that was important for me was reliability; so we will not be pushing it to get every last HP we can get. I'll keep this updated as things progress.

My 08 just did 630rwhp 613rwtq. Mods Bellangers, exhaust, Mopar PCM, Torco mix to 95 octane

I hope you can get 650rwhp, LS7's can get like 630rwhp with heads/cam.

And it only takes 14 to 1 comp and E85 to get that on a LS7....

580-600 rwhp is a more realistic # for a heads, and HUGE cam LS7. And they will make 600 rwhp with 500 (or less) RWTQ. Were a (striker) Heads cam viper will make as much TQ as it does HP. Like mine at 612 rwhp and 619 rwtq. On real pump gas.
