96\' RT/10 factory headers vs. 02\' RT/10 factory headers

I can pick up a set of OEM headers from an 02' RT/10 for free, but was wondering is it a worthwhile upgrade? I remember reading that they weigh less and flow better, but will it be enough of an improvement to justify the trouble of swapping them out? Will they make the car any louder (always a plus ;) ) And, will they bolt directly up to my car without any modding? TIA!

Chad they need a little bit of modding.....
The links in between will need to be cut out as they hit the head bolts....
You will also need the next bit of the exhaust that bolts to the headers because its a different conection (flexi pipe)...
Not sure on your other questions because i did Roe RT/10 exhaust and HF cats at the same time.....

Saves 23 lbs and adds no power. Dyno proven.

If you want a set of headers for your GenI I got my old set of Borla headers I would sell for $500. Part # 17078. It was their first release/design for the Viper. They came off my 96RT10 so they will fit your car. They fit the GenII as well. I bought them new 3 years ago and they only have about 10k miles on them. My car put down 490/510 with those headers so..... A much cheaper alternative when you consider you can't touch a set of headers new/or even sometimes used for under $1000. They are stainless and the primary tubes are 1 5/8 and the collector is 2.5 so you can keep the rest of your exhaust factory or ? It will come with all the factory hardware and everything you need to install. Let me know

I thought they worked very well myself. I went to Edelbrocks and while I haven't dynoed my car since then I'm not sure there is much of a difference.....sound maybe? Chad these have never been cut on or nothing. It's a direct bolt in. I have pics of them in my gallery back before putting my motor back in and when they were new. I didn't run heat shields either. I never had any problems.

viperrt96,
Speaking of pictures in your gallery, what ever happened to the direct link to each members gallery from the avatar section of each post? I really miss that shortcut to each persons picture gallery.

Later,

You're right! I forgot about that option. Where did it go? We need to ask the admins if they can put it back!

Anyway here's a pic of it when it was new.

If you'll notice closely to the collector you'll see we ported all of the thick welds. Also at the head/manifold side. Just cleaned up the welds so things would flow more free. They are a pretty decent header for the money. They are direct bolt ons for both the GenI and GenII

Geez.. I need headers... been in Daytona for Bike Week and just got home (why would that matter??)

If these are still available, I'd be interested in buying them!

VIPERRT/96,
What other mods do you have that resulted in the 490/510 aside from the Borla Headers?

VIPERRT/96,

Heads I/E ported & milled .060", match ported intake,708 cam w/1.7 RR's,65mm TB's,red top injectors and those Borla Headers w/3" Randomtech Cat back exhaust-no cats. To summarize I somewhat genII-ized (lack of a better word) my old GenI. The combination I did really woke the car up. No-comparison. My viper then was running 12.7's to 12.9's and now it's a low 11 second car. The only thing I've changed since then is I went to Edlebrock headers and that was so I could get the collector the same size as the rest of the exhaust. I'm currently installing NOS and I needed (at least I'm thinking) a little better flowing exhaust. I want in the 10's and with the NOS it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm going to be dynoing here soon to verify my AF under the spray but I'll do a baseline and I'll report out if there is any difference. I'm betting there is very little.

I talked to the guy who I thought I was going to get the 02' headers from tonight and he said he actually planned on getting $100 for them to help cover some paintwork he needs done to his Viper. If anyone is interested, I can give you his contact info.

Re: 96\' RT/10 factory headers vs. 02\' RT/10 factory headers

On the Borla headers, one thing I did to mine was to modify the collector to make it work with my 3" cat back. Plus I hated the the flex pipe looked(probably flowed terriblily). I cut the collector just behind the O2 sensor plug and welded on a solid 3" pipe and had a custom turnout made. There was some talk about not putting the J hook for the turnout on the pipe, but I did. I made sure when it bolted to the frame, it was lower on the mount bushing so allowing for a little movement up when the engine torqued up. Just food for thought.
