I have a 98 GTS with an AEM computer. With new Ontario emissions testing, there is obviously no communication with the stock ECU through the OBD port that is required for the test. Knowing that the stock ECU is relocated under the passenger part of the dash I removed it and plugged it back into the original harness instead of the AEM. I thought that if I could "limp" the car around for a few miles the computer would read the sensors and I could pass the test. The car would turn over but it would not fire. I know that the 02 sensors get rewired with the installation of the AEM - if the stock computer does not see them is this why it would not start?

What are your mods? Why is there a need for an AEM? If your car is heavily modded with larger fuel injectors, ported heads, bigger cam, ect the stock PCM will not compensate for it and you'll fail the ODB test anyway. I know with the VEC the camshaft position sensor is wired through it so in order to run the car without it you need to complete the circuit. Not saying it's the same, but something to think about. You can check to see the if the 02 sensors are reading with a data logger, not sure if that would effect the spark though.

I know Viper Specialty has a way to pass OBD tests with an AEM, but I believe he only mods the cars that are in his shop.

Car is modded - Paxton, headers, throttle bodies, etc. Funny you should mention Viper Specialty - have been thinking of talking to Dan about sending the car to him for some work.

Mopar Performance PCM is one solution (for temporary use ;-)

The AEM is probably set up for use with different sensors at the moment, a number of which would not allow the engine to run on the OE ECU.

Yes, we can re-wire the car for OBD-2 testability on any of the stand-alone ECUs, but it is a rather involved process overall.

I just did my emission test about 2 weeks ago. Passed with flying colors, but there was no hook up to the ODB. All they do for our cars is a 2 second idle test. From what they explained to me, on all vipers 2000 and older, they do not use the ODB due to it not providing the info that they need for the new test so they only do the idle test.

Worst case, i would just find someone who is willing to do the idle test instead as it will pass that.

My car won't even come close to passing the 2 speed idle test. Tried a few years ago then had to get creative to get it to "pass".

Just slip the guy a couple of Borden's.

This new test involves the tester taking 3 pics of the actual car and submitting them with the OBD hook up test results. Hard to cheat the test but easy to pass if the OBD connection is there. It does not check actual emissions, just makes sure that all sensors are working and no check engine light which is an automatic fail.

I just won't move into silly areas which have Emissions testing. One less thing to worry about. OR buy some cheap 30k home or 10k trailer somewhere in the midwest to use as your legal residence to register your cars to then rent it out. :p
