This may sound idiotic but can someone post picture of how the palm should be facing between shift. I think I get it but it sounds like a very awkward position to have your palm facing away from you... I think I have my palm facing down during all shifts... :(

"The shifter in the Viper has to be the weak link...feedback on the B&M Ripper, Woodhouse Modded, SVS, or other shifters and didn't receive a lot of comments one way or the other.

Many people have had this problem and you'd think that we could come up with a solution."

How about machining a shifter knob with a depression on the left side? This would cause the weight of the hand to naturally push to the right, without the driver having to awkwardly twist his/her wrist.

We're not going to flame you because we've been there! Most of us have stories about that crazy thing that happened while we were learning to tame the Viper beasts we are driving. Every Viper driver worth his/her stripes has had that flushed head, adrenalin pumping, and knot at the bottom of their stomach after doing something really stupid. But once you realize that you're alive and the car is ok (or can be fixed) you move on into that exhilarating zone of proud (but humble) Viper ownership. Glad you passed the initiation, Mike!

sbkim,

Head over to the Alley and view BigCarrot's Avatar. I'm not p1mping the Alley in this case as Big **** posts here as well but his avatar is very helpfull. Try putting your hand palmdown on a desk and imaginarily shifting sometimes 'seeing' the shift helps you realize the shift and good luck.

I've learned to raise my elbow when shifting from 3rd to 4th after doing 2 360's at the track when I hit 2nd instead of 4th. The car was not balanced as I accelarated out of a kink in the back straight. Rookie mistake. My wife was with me. No damage, but I felt like a goofball! If you don't get the clutch right in in these situations, the car rotates as if you'd pulled the parking brake, particularly if the car is not balanced.

That's called the "Money Shift" for obvious reasons. This is a mechanical over-rev, the engine RPM's are determined by your speed and gear selection, not the other way around. The rev-limiter, then, will not help. If you are near redline and drop a gear down, the engine spins too fast for its design. The most common damage would be valve impact caused by valve float beyond the design limits. Throwing a rod or a variety of other problems could occur as well. None are usually good. The wheel spin may have helped you actually, by limiting the rotational speed you were transmitting from your drivetrain back through to the engine. I hope I am making sense here, or maybe you already get this, the wheels were turning slower than they were when you downshifted, spun (relatively) backwards, and induced your near spin. That's a lot of torque change and, hopefully, all you'll have is a broken mount. You need to get it checked out. I would NOT drive this car until you do.
Best of luck!

Sorry for the extra post. I actually did not see page 2 of comments! Anyway, someone asked to describe the placement of the palm relative to the knob during the upshift. Here are some photos from a website which sells shifters for another brand of car (no M3 flame wars please!)

Cop Magent,

Great post!! I saved the entire page for practice on both upshifting and downshifting.

Cheers,
