That's what I recall. Also wasn't it an up and coming vacation and entertainment hotspot for Cher, Streisand, Frank and gang until everyone learned what the word "apartheid" meant? So the rich people quit going there and now...well, now nobody goes there.

Paul Hawker – In the South African system, there has to first be a legal claim to piece of land that must then be determined legitimate by a court before that land is subject to a “buy out” by the government and returned to it rightful owner(s). There was a HUGE transfer of land and wealth under first colonialism and then decades of brutal apartheid from nonwhites to whites.

The economy was never almost destroyed, but obviously there were a lot of nervous companies who were already invested in the country at the time of change, as it could have been a Hugo Chavez type situation. The economy is doing very well, credit ratings and reserves are up above expectations. Foreign investment is up. It is amazing to me that the transfer from a minority white government to a DEMOCRATIC government (I’m sure you can appreciate that as an AMERICAN) went with such little violence.

The government is secular and constitutionally based.

Warfang – Yes Winnie Mandela, the ex wife of Nelson Mandela, has been convicted of numerous serious crimes and has only received a slap on the wrist. I don’t believe that alone determines if the country is better off or not. It is certainly better for the millions of blacks (anyone not white is considered black) who suffered greatly under apartheid.

Chuck - you are really dating yourself with your choice of entertainment, but I believe that you are referring to Sun City, South Africa’s premier holiday resort. As rest of the developed countries in the world could no longer ignore apartheid, there was pressure to boycott the country in a lot of different ways. One was that international entertainers and athletes should not go to South Africa to perform. As a result, it became a gold mine for those that chose to take the heat and perform, sometimes for a million dollars for a single show!!!!! Of course they would risk a “Dixie Chick” like reception from the rest of the world upon their return home. Kinda funny how people aren’t so upset with the Dixie Chicks anymore.

Nope, not really so in South Africa. I have friends from Cape Town and while there has been violence and such there has been minimal claim jumping.

Nope, not really so in South Africa. I have friends from Cape Town and while there has been violence and such there has been minimal claim jumping.

Minimal means that as residents of the country, they know of no cases where this has occured, but are not omnipresent. It also means that there have been carjackings and things of the like in the past that you could put into this category if you chose to. Carjackings and other assaults against people are crimes that occur anywhere, like here in the US.

It also means that there was an increase in property crimes and a general decrease in the feeling of public saftey that sounded to me like what New Orleans when through.

No statement of approval or disapproval was made, it was merely pointed out the source of government sanctioned take over property is a quarter of a continent away from South Africa (<- that is the name of a country, not a general area of a continent).

Because of high labor rates and massive pensions, benefits up the *****, (like GM is saddled with) Chrysler was weak for takeover. Lutz couldn't have stopped it from happening even if he wanted to. Economics will have its day of reckoning.

If we really don't want American industry to get absorbed by foreign powers, the best thing to do is not to express hatred for other nations, or dwell on past wars, but to get off our collective fat aszes, and make American industry competitive with other nations once again.

I have nothing but hatred for union leadership ****, but the eurotrashers aren't all work and no play either. Most get 2-6 month vacations out of the year(!). What makes us weak competitively is a combination of union excesses and the greedy execs up top that line their pockets without a second thought to our country or their employees.

And let's get our definition of whining straightened out here. Whether Daimler had "merged" with Chrysler or not, that billboard needed to be addressed, especially if they wish to do business in this country. ******** about no traction control on a Viper... THAT's whining.
