Spent some time reading up on the Vette threads (okay 4 hours)and see they run Royal Purple and Red Line motor oil. I've had positive experience with Red Line products in the past for rear end, tranny, water wetter, etc, and would trust their motor oil. Royal Purple I haven't, yet those guys claim a few ponies on identical dyno runs over Mobil 1, a few near free horsepower anyone think?

To clarify they are stating that either the Red Line or Royal Purple in the motor will dyno higher than Mobil 1, all three being synthetic......

Anyone shed some light on this?

Yeah, I've been running Royal Purple for a few oil changes. Not really sure about the extra hp (they claim more), but the car does in fact seem to run a bit cooler. So far so good.

I've been using their regular multi-viscosity 10W-30 oil. The 41 is actually a racing oil and I haven't tried any of those. If I were to run one of the racing oils it would either be 21 or 41 (5W-30 or 10W-40), depending on the application. If you try one let me know how you like it.

I have a friend who also runs Max ATF in his transmission and claims much smoother shifting. Although this would be "forbidden", I may try Max ATF in my tranny............Just don't tell anyone.

I have been not using Mobil One since the first track event I did. The Mobil seemed to burn 1-2 quarts a weekend. I then switched to Red Line and the oil burning has since stopped. A year after I tried the Royal Purple and holy cow, my Viper now runs 10-15 degrees cooler. How, why and when are something I cannot answer? I can tell you that Royal Purple is the only oil I will now put in my Viper.

Clancy,

You can go to www.royalpurple.com and click on "automotive and racing products", then click on "dealers". The site will tell you where you can get their products in your area. I get mine from NAPA.

Oh, by the way, I see you only have 250 miles on your ACR. They recommend you break in the car with the specified oil then switch to Royal Purple.

The folks I deal with have an extremely good grip on this and they tell me that Mobil 1 is actually a really good product. They put it in the engines they ship to customers, despite having sponsorship from another oil company. Mobil 1 can be "beat" as far as hp gains from reduced parasitic losses, but not by much. And...the synthetic alternatives cost quite a bit more.

They tell me Royal Purple is fine too, but we begin to split hairs here as far as whether others outdo Mobil 1 in hp. Dyno results have a nominal error of ± 1-2% and that makes it really hard to get a handle on what a particular motor oil is really doing, since it's usually just a few hp.

The pro drag racers prefer extremely thin synthetic oils (around zero weight). Really thin oils can make "significant" hp gains (5-8 hp) because of the reduced viscous drag. However, you have to have an oil pump that has enough volume and oil gallery restrictions may be needed to regulate flow rates. The oil also must not get too hot in operation.

The people I work with run a synthetic oil that would test as zero weight in their pro race car. It's so thin, it's rated on a more senstive "centistokes" scale. Their oil was actually developed for the aircraft industry, but--they also have a very sophisticated dry-sump system. I'm not about to pour this stuff into my Viper without the other mods.

It's important to remember too that oil is consumed in the combustion process and can upset the anti-knock characteristics of the fuel. The thin syn's tend to be less volatile than mineral oils, and this may be a small part of the reason these folks see measurable gains from the extremely thin syn's--they push the compression ratio to as much as 16.5 to 1.

I'm personally going to stay with the Mobil 1 for now. It meets the manufacturer's recommendations directly (mine is still in warranty), it's inexpensive enough to allow me to do frequent oil changes (I really believe in that), and it looks to be as good or nearly as good as the alternatives as far as hp.

I've squeezed the occasional banana peel into the Viper, oh wait, that was my deux-cheveaux... just kidding.

Seriously though, I haven't tried anything other than Mobil in the Viper. I had an interesting experience with my S4 though. I had just changed from Mobil to Amsoil and my wife noticed that the car was running smoother. After numerous oil switching, sure enough, the Audi runs better with Amsoil than with Mobil. I guess that's what I get for owning a snobby car.

The chief chemist at VP Race Fuels (San Antonio) has been experimenting with traction compound & asphalt chemistry interaction. He asked if I could get him a 5 gallon bucket of asphalt - so I sent my parts runner down that afternoon. He called while my man was there and asked what weight oil I like to run. He sent me a case of VP 15w-50 synthetic for a bucket of asphalt! It's about time now to pull a sample and have it run to compare with Mobil 1.

I've been using Amsoil products, with good results, for over 26 years. I am currently running Amsoil Series 2000 0W-30. Last month, with 6000 miles on the oil, (almost a year--stored for winter) I changed it and sent some in for analysis. It came back as 'good to go' It didn't need to be changed. This batch of oil had a(short time) high speed(140-162 MPH) track event and seven 1.5 mile(4-6 runs each time) autocross events on it where I get to high rpms in first gear a lot.

I might add that it is also very important to keep the air filters clean and use a high quality oil filter. High silica content in the oil is not condusive to long engine kife.
