it has the viper vs. Vett vs. gt500. the viper wins around the track (vette second and gt500 last),viper wins also wins in braking, and MT figure 8, vette wins in acceleration/quarter mile (with the viper right behind) ford GT00 gets last in every performance category. here was the finishing order over all (with what they said)

THREE.....
DODGE VIPER SRT-10 COUPE
Best enjoyed in small doses at max lap. Those seeking a long term relationship might want to look else where

TWO......
FORD SHELBY GT500
Powerful and stirring, yet thoroughly civilized. spells "value in capitol letters".

ONE......
CHEVROLET CORVETTE Z06
you could drive it every day. you could almost drive it to Le Mans.

they basically say that the viper is best for the track but worst for daily driving.

I couldnt give a rats ass what a magazine says/thinks about a car. They all say the same thing.

I wonder how much general motors pays those magazines to always give the best reviews to the vette.....those mags can kiss my ass

The Viper loses points because it costs more than the Shelby. Later in the same mag they pick the Mercedes SUV as the best not knocking it for the fact that its more than the others. Be consistant people!

While I don't really care what the magazines say, I am AMAZED these guys are such pansies!! I drove no PS, no AC Corvettes happily since '76 and enjoyed every mile - admittedly some were pretty hot, but that's the way the sun is in the summer.

The SRT-10 is a fine daily driver. Ingress and Egress are the ONLY negatives for its daily use - that and fear of getting hit or having the doors hit while parked. Part of the ingress egress is my fault for being 51 and about 20 pounds heavier than I ought to be....

Also, I won't put mine on salted roads.

I can see some of the temp comments, especially after being on a track.

Did anyone notice the weight of the Z06? Is it getting heavier or reporting error (either now or previously)?

I was surprized that they never mentioned real world prices which are very similar right now. MSRP is only suggested. Real world sales is better indicator of the real cost.

The 2007 Z has "improved sound deadening," so it was assumed it might be a tad heavier. Not sure what the magazine's numbers were, but in 2006 the 1LZ package weighed 3132, and the 2LZ weighed 3150 (without a driver).

I agree.

My Z was purchased for $70.3k and traded it in for the Viper and got $69k with 14k miles.

Purchased the Viper for $74.7 that listed for $88k

I'm really not sure. I'd be amazed (and sorta happy) if they added another 100lbs to the new Vette. It'd make my 2006 feel more special :)

Only if the 100 lbs (and I am not convinced MT is correct - they have been wrong before) was in a non-essential area. Hate to think if it went to structural aspects. I have been worried about the aluminum frame from the get go. I would be very worried if upping the power or traction significantly. Reminds me of the BMW Z08 with all of the frame issues (took several years in the field to come to the surface).

I haven't heard of any frame issues yet, but apparently a lot of people were shattering the right rear halfshaft, and they beefed it up for the 2007 models. No problems with those cars, or the '06's with the new shafts replaced yet.

Again, the only thing I am aware of that would make the '07 model heavier is the "improved sound deadening" I will admit I'm not extremely educated on the '07 models though.

Damn that is close. And neat. Now I am wondering if the weight increase is real as the straight line accel difference seemed to be down.

Motortrend is more impressed with features like auto parallel parking and the speed that a convertible top operates. The fact that the Viper won at the track was probably overshadowed when they scorched their ankles getting out of it.

Shakeybolt needs to put that extra 100 LBs into strengthening their LS7 engine somehow to keep those things from blowing up like IEDs in an unhappy Gaza neighborhood.

Motortrends Virtual race of the three cars:

Was that telemetry from an actual race or just a computerize
interpritation of the final numbers? If that was an actual
race I could see where people get so confused with MT articles
- that was some of the worst line setups I have ever seen.
Espcially the vette in the early turns and the viper in
that wideass plow in the last turn.

They got it right. It is not a car for candyazzes.

Yes they did!

Some of the comments:

“The Viper is so thunderous and audacious, it could’ve been cooked up by Wernher Von Braun himself. Up front lies a hulking, 8.3-liter aluminum V-10 making 510 horsepower and 535 pound-feet. Exhausts the diameter of stovepipes spit out hot firing pulses ahead of each rear wheel. The wedgy Dodge is like a Saturn V(rocket) that way: It demands your full attention, even when it’s sitting still. The torque-rich V-10 pulls hard even from low revs. This is high-octane overkill at its best. Most of the time, stepping on the Viper’s gas pedal is like using a fire hose to water your petunias.

The test driver reports that the Viper was easier to push hard than the Z06, proving stable in corners and under braking- particularly impressive, given that the Viper chassis has no electronic stability aids. All of which exposes the Viper for what it really is: A thinly disguised race car with a radio and turn signals for street use.”

Yep, they got it!

MT’s words:

“The graphic should give you some idea of each car’s strengths and weaknesses. But to see exactly what happened, check them out virtually at the website. There you’ll be immersed in a 3-dimensional reenactment of the cars fastest laps, all shown simultaneously as they cut and thrust their way around the track. Every lurid wiggle was recorded and viewable.”

some odd lines in that animation for a fastest lap. the oddest part is the vette and viper didn't even seem to be driving the same course!

I read it @ the Dentist today. I thought there were quite a few nice compliments about the new coupe.

spec Viper Z06
0-60 3.9 3.7
0-100 8.4 7.8
1/4 12.1/118 11.7/127
100-0 280 320
60-0 104 107
lap
time 1.01.15 1.01.16

The #s were very close all around and they couldn't compliment the TQ & brakes enough. They mentioned the price (Viper sticker vs. 06 Z sticker - they just raised $4k in 07) as the reason it came in 3rd, but you can now get both cars in the mid $70s. I'm confident they'd probably have called it a tie given equal price.

Great read.

12.1 at 121 mph for the viper wasnt bad at all...And 11.7 at 125 for the Vette as well..

But man that 12.7 at 114 mph for the GT500 is pretty slow...

Im just happy to know that my 99 viper can still beat the mustangs after all these years.

Agreed. How is it that BMW can make a car that weighs two or three hundred pounds more than the GT500, has the same hp, less torque, yet runs a 1/2 quicker and 5 mile per hour faster in the 1/4? Come to think of it, the M6 is only a tick behind the Viper. Imagine what it could do if it was as light as the Z06. Maybe the US auto makers should take some lessons from these guys. :bonker:
