I've always heard that the best bang for the buck is gears. I've also heard horror stories of whine from aftermarket gears. Anyone with a '98 GTS have it done with any opinions?

"Gear whine" shouldn't be experienced after about 4.10 gears.

My Fe has 3:73 gears and there's a definite whine in 6th gear.
With the windows down it's not noticeable but with them up it's annoying. As for what type of gears they are I'm not sure. The previous owner supposedly changed the entire rear pumpkin so I would expect they were new.

Street slicks no whine for over 6 years.
I think its just a super 88 rear end. Not sure.
A sponser tried to sell me cryo gears but my mechanic who builds race cars for 40 years, says it is a simple rear end, and he was right, as I have had zero issues with the less expensive gears.

Gears satisfaction depends on the quality of the set up.

Too tight = whine
Too loose = weak.
Just right = quiet and strong.

It is a practiced art to set up gears. Best to use an experienced shop.

New gears certaintly make the Viper more fun to drive.
