Has anybody used a cigarette lighter plug on a Battery Tender? Any problems ruining your electrical system, particularly on a 96 GTS? I would like to get the adaptor and use it, but I do not want any problems either.

If the lighter will work when the car is turned off, then you can charge through the lighter socket with the car turned off.

It will work (i.e. ciggie butt lighter works) with key off.
But, why not hard wire under the hood to plug into??
I have used this a number of times (again cigarette lighter), when I have had the battery disconnected, to preserve the computer, radio, and any other setting in the car. Have also used it on other cars I own for battery disconnects. Very useful.

I had mine hard wired for a while, but the wing nut kept backing off and gave me all kinds of electrical gremlins. That added with the warnings about stripping/ruining the stud/wiring harness made me rethink the whole thing and go for the cig plug. Either way works fine, but since the older cars don’t have windows it is not much of a compromise.

I have been using the cig lighter plug deal since about 1998 on three different Vipers...works great.

I did not want to install under the hood as I did not want to have the look of the charger hanging on the car.

I had mine hard wired and don't even need to lift the hood. I made it that all I need to do is reach in the opening on the "gill" and plug my tender. Love it is since I can still put the cover with no problem. Not sure if I still have the pics on how I did it but I'll look if anyone is interested..... :2tu:

I actually hard wired the quick disconnect to the posts under the hood so I could just plug the other end of the cord into the Tender. After a drive, there is so much radiant heat from the metal, I was reluctant to leave the wires hanging due to possible melting of the insulation and shorting of the wires together or a bare wire touching the metal which could cause more problems. You also need to drill the eye connector to fit one of the posts. Anybody used this process before?
