Hi all, just bought a 96 gts this week! Sure beats my 00 prowler. It was nice but a little to slooooow for my liking! When I got trounced by a subaru WRX, I made the decision that will NEVER happen again! Am i better off leaving the car all original, or is ok to do K&Ns, tubes, eibachs, (to much wheel well for me), any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Filters and smoothies, tires, headers etc. are great but they won't make up for seat time. Get familiar with the car and you are unlikely to see tailights again from anything that hasn't been thoroughly modded. There's a reason the Ferraris don't come out to play at the Viper/Ferrari War the way they used never mind the Subarus. Adjusting the nut behind the wheel that makes the biggest difference but take your time, there's a real learning curve involved with a car with such high performance parameters. Have fun and congrats!

Wait a second, Im confused, did you say you got beat by a Subaru WRX? how? surely not a straight out streetrace unless it was mod. its only a 2.0L turbo, i think they go around 220HP. nice little cars and rugged as hell but beating a viper, I agree with the other replies, its definitely the driver, get to know your snake better and go find that guy and have a rematch.

I think he got beat in his Prowler to the WRX. That won't happen in his Snake!
Congrats on your New Snake! I owned a '97 Prowler(Sooooo Slow!), but fun to cruise, ended up trading it in on my first GTS! I wondered why I bothered getting it in the first place afterwards(although I got alot more for it on trade than I paid)! I am anxious to see how long you keep it! You know you can trade it in for a used RT/10 and come pretty close to even!!

Guys, reread 00prowler's original post. He got beat by the WRX in his Prowler, so he sold it and bought the '96 GTS. Congrats!

Now, that being said, the AWD on the WRX will still give him a slight advantage off the line until you learn to handle your 480 hp monster. (That's right, if/when you dyno the car you will discover it is underrated by 30 hp or so!

Good luck, and take it easy at first!

WOW! I FEEL LIKE MY MINDS PLAYING TRICKS ON ME BECAUSE I COULD'VE SWORN HE SAID HE GOT BEAT WHILE IN HIS VIPER TOO! BUT YOU WERE EXACTLY RIGHT VENOM.

I WOULD DO ALL OF THE BOLT-ONS POSSIBLE 1ST. THROTTLE BODIES, K'S, EXHAUST, HEADERS, ETC. THAT BEING SAID, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET IN THE HIGH 11'S. AFTER YOU'VE GOTTEN THE FULL POTENTIAL OUT OF WHAT YOU'VE PURCHASED, THEN I'D UPGRADE AGAIN. AT EACH STAGE, TRYING TO GET THE FULL POTENTIAL OUT OF THE CAR BEFORE THE NEXT UPGRADE. THAT'S JUST MY OPINION & HOW I DID IT. IT'S A WHOLE DIFFERENT WORLD AT THE TRACK. EIBACH'S ARE A 100% MUST! WAAAAAAYY TOO MUCH ROOM IN BETWEEN THE WHEEL WELL! I NEVER REALLY NOTICED IT TILL ALL THE HOUSTON GUYS STARTED TEASING ME. AND THEY WERE RIGHT.

Mods are standard, except for the eibachs. The car sets pretty low to begin with, can your roads in CT handle the additional lowering? I too hate the huge wheel well gap!

1st go to the dragstrip and learn to drive the car. Most viper owners drive thru a 1/4 equal to an experienced Mustang GT owner, sad.
Then decide how fast 1/4 will make you happy.
If the WRX handed you lunch,NOS is the cheapest way to beat em.Get S&B filters better than K&N,headers, exhaust, nice,Springs are a must,I can't stand the stock wheel/well setting.

Join VCA please: 1-800-998-1110. Welcome to the 96GTS sub-cult. Make the mods on a car you will drive. Save the OE parts.

Not a driver? Dont make mods. Omni-bag and trailer it.

Subaru WRX will still bite you in Auto-X !!!

Sorry Jon, but there is no way a Subaru will be a competent driver in an Autocross. I have driven both, and they are not even classed together. You are seldom incorrect, and I am not flaming you, but this is a subject dear to my heart and it is often perpetuated even by the faithful. I have 2 FTD's at autocrosses ( not trying to be egotistical here), and this was when the car was classed in ASP. We all think the car is too big, but a Camaro or a Mustang is heavier and almost as wide, and they dominate in FS and ESP. We had ( National )trophy drivers in ESP , CP , FMod, and EP. The officer that happened to stop out used radar on all the cars through the slalom --- fastest car, a 98 Viper GTS. I am confident that a strong driver , with an ABS car should be able to take the Solo II National Championship in Topeka this year, as the Snake is now classed in Super Stock. Hoosiers are legal in this class and the only problem we have so far, is no one I know of has been campaigning a 2001 or 2002. Keep in mind the car won a National Championship in the 90's and was immediately banned as Vette drivers whined. The car went to ASP, and few folks ran after that. The Snake can hold it's own , can dominate, but so far few have autocrossed much.

The Subaru is heavily modded if it is the one being mentioned in the Subaru forums. Last year it ran 12.6. It has better engine management now, so it probably is faster this year. The guy posted almost beating a Viper last year (from CT), so must be the one.
With a boost controller and downpipe-> mid to high 13's.
With piggyback computer and above-> low 13's.
With bigger turbo, intercooler, stand alone computer, fuel pump, injectors.....sounds like the Supra crowd, eh?

Don't feel bad, 60 ft times in the Rex is 1.8 for the intermediate racers and 1.6 for the experienced. AWD helps Subies alot.
