When at the Barratt-Jackson charity auction for the first production Viper, we got the chance to speak with the designers and engineers for the Gen V.

I casually asked what the deal was with the new Launch Control, and the answer stopped me in my tracks. The answer was that it allowed you to "beat everybody, every time".

Further discussion revealed that it did not mean that it was going to be the fastest car out of the hole considering 4wd set ups, or tubbed out street racers with slicks, but that it was designed to take the anxiety out of hole shots.

Don't know about everybody else, but I consider myself pretty good at launching my Viper, but still there is a bunch of anxiety about getting it going against tough competion. Sometimes I bog just a bit, or get over zealous, and spin a bunch too much. Sometimes I hit a painted line on the asphalt, and feel the tires skip and need to throttle back to regain traction.

With Launch Control, we can just hammer down and lay down consistant maximum launches.

For those who believe they can improve on the system, or simply wish to remain in complete control of the launch, they can easily leave Launch Control off and use their own personal skill to get off the line.

When on ViperClub events it is not unknow for members to line up against the Viper next to them at a light or stop sign. I know now that if I find myself up against a Gen V I will need to be on the top of my game, and will respect it's capability.

somehow i knew chuck was gonna be on this discussion

As much as I like Chuck and respect and understand his sentiment, it will most likely be a similar comment read from the lips of the guy in my rear view mirror. This option will absolutely help in stop light situations and will be easily turned off when at the drag strip on stickier tires.

With Paul H on this 100%.

The best quotes I ever heard about launch control was, "No skill required." and "Now your grandmother can race too."

I can see the truth in this, but the truth is that the days of so much of it being up to the driver being perfect are over. If the other guy doesn't have to do anything but step on it, you are at a major disadvantage. Nobody is perfect every time.
Not that I like it, but that's the way it is now.

It would be a great challenge to identical gen v one with launch on and one off , to see if you could beat the one with launch on.

Use launch control as a training aid. Can you beat your own LAunch Control time with Launch Control turned off?

Just to add fuel to the fire, the F1 drivers say they use "automatic" on acceleration and "manual" on deceleration. That is they turn the acceleration over to the gear box for max acceleration and control the deceleration shift points manually. They all use launch control on the standing start.

My favorate saying; "My nanny and I will beat you every time!"

For pure acceleration, no one can beat launch control. Go the drag strips some time and watch some very heavy sedans with launch control perform. Street tires of course. I'm not sure if the Viper Launch Control is calibrated for drag tires or not.

They said a similar thing about big cube motors in the 70s.

I cant wait to see what she will do both with LC on and LC off with a skilled driver like Furman and others.....It would be nice if it can be calibrated for drags too since it is brought to you by "SRT"....

On a drag radial it should 60' faster with it off I would think. On a street tire at the track it will be more consistent with it on, but I still think the fastest runs will be with it off. Guys like Furman or that goober Ranger are looking for one perfect run so consistency is less of a concern.

No, No, and heck no.

I have launch control on my viper and it rips your dang head off. I get no spin and my times have come down almost a half second off the 60' time.

Hmmm,

I had LC on my old Z06 and my best 60's were with it turned off, so I guess it depends on the driver. I was more consistent with it on, but faster with it off. That was my experience at least.
