BOBBY ARCHER WINS 5TH CONSECUTIVE SCCA T1 RACE
Bobby Archer drove his No. 32 SuperClubs Resorts/Bobby Archer Motorsports/ViperSpeed Viper to a record 5th consecutive T1 victory on June 17th at Texas World Speedway (TWS) in College Station, Texas. With this victory, Archer completed a clean sweep of the National T1 races in SCCA’s Southwest Division. Taking into account three other events Archer competed in this year, this latest win marks the 8th consecutive time this year that Archer has driven his black-and-yellow No. 32 Viper to victory.
When ViperSpeed drivers Archer and Dr. Deborah Loth arrived at TWS they found out that the usual 2.9 mile layout would not be used, but instead a shorter 1.8 mile track configuration would be used. Both drivers quickly adapted to the new configuration and, despite the intense Texas heat, were excited to take to the track for qualifying. Loth, driving her own yellow Viper recently prepped by Bobby Archer Motorsports, started and finished Saturday’s Regional T1 race in 2nd place. Loth took the lead of the race for a while but spun after getting into the marbles outside a turn. She quickly gathered herself and the car up and was able to work her way back through the field for very respectable 2nd place finish.
Both Archer and Loth competed in Sunday’s National T1 race, with Bobby starting from the pole and Dr. Loth starting from the 4th position. Two Corvette Z06’s separated the Vipers of Archer and Loth. In all, eight T1 cars took the green flag for Sunday’s race, including a Steeda Mustang and a couple of Ferrari’s. Having slowed the field down to a crawl, Archer used the torque of his Viper’s V-10 to take off to a commanding lead at the drop of the green flag. The Z06’s stayed in contact though and one of them turned the fastest race lap while trying to track Archer down. As the field encountered traffic, Archer skillfully negotiated his way through the pack and again distanced himself from the other T1 cars. From then on, Archer was never seriously pressured again and would go on to win his 5th consecutive T1 race. One of the Z06’s blew a motor during the race, allowing Dr. Loth to move up a spot and claim a 3rd place podium finish in the National race. Given the 104° ambient temperature, Archer and Loth were quite pleased that their typically hot-running Vipers were able to withstand the heat and continue running strong through the end of the race.
The win at TWS should give Archer the Southwest Division’s T1 Championship. Meanwhile, Dr. Loth’s quest for the Southwest Division’s Regional T1 title resumes next weekend as Archer and Loth travel to Hallet, OK for a Midwest Division T1 race on June 30. Loth set a track record at Hallet in Regional T1 competition earlier this year and should be very competitive again as the ViperSpeed crew continues to develop her new T1 Viper. This will be Archer’s final scheduled race until the heavily anticipated SCCA Run-Off’s at Mid-Ohio on September 21st. For more information on ViperSpeed Racing, go to www.viperspeed.com.
