C6 ZO6 VS GEN I Viper at HPT Roadcourse
One of my goals every track day is to not get to Competitive. This post is about me failing miserable at this goal……….. again.
I am at the world famous and newly repaved Heartland Park Topeka Roadcourse getting ready to run. I run in the Intermediate class with moderately experienced drivers. And with various cars (lotus Elises, Mustangs, BMWs, Miatas, G35s etc.) And on this occasion one particular corvette: a C6 Z06 corvette to be exact.
I parked in the first spot in the staging area (as usual) so I have an open road (for at least a few laps). The Z06 pulled right next to me in the parking area so we could run together.
We start are cars and get on the track. At the last turn of our warm up lap I see the C6 Z06 fill up my rear view mirror. I know he wants to pass. The ego takes over. I run threw the gears on the straight up alpha zero and then start to brake for the first turn. I quickly flow with the rhythm of the track knowing that I better be quick. By the first lap I have gained a few cars breathing room. Every lap thereafter I slowly pull on the Z06 more and more.
When I get back to the parking area I get a pat on the back from a few friends impressed I kept the car behind me. Not to mention a good story to brag about to my Viper buddies.
