You might save yourself some money buy buying parts through a vendor here on the site and just have the dealership do the install. I'm pretty sure you can get a better price on the tires. I'm assumeing you were looking to go with PS2's and if that the case I know you can do better. Give Chuck Tator a call. He's "The viper wizard" here on the boards. Also give Jon B. from parts rack a call as well. Jon B. on the boards.

That explains it!

What's wrong with your steering box?

Nothing to my knowledge...the technician said it felt clanky to him when he turned it back and forth (parked)

Is there a way I can check this myself? I have no problems driving the car..

170 labor to mount tires? Talk about highway robbery!! Labor on the brakes is about right, and the steering gear labor doesn't horribly bad considering I'm sure that includes a alignment which is time consuming on these cars. Labor guide says 1.4 hr's to R&R steering gear, which I'm sure they rounded up to 2hours so that plus a alignment.

Honestly, if it's not leaking and feels great to you keep on truckin. If your unsure see if there is another Viper owner in your area and get his opinion of your car.

There are a ton of parts that could contribute to that. Tie rod ends, control arm bushings, ball joints and on. I'd go find a front end shop that has a rack that can take a car like yours and get a second opinion. Just tell them you heard a clanking noise and need an educated looksie.

id never let any other "dealer" besides tator touch my car.

personally i use a friend who owns a local shop to do most of the normal wear and tear work on it.

This is without tax on the parts...

PartsRack can save you $950 on tires,
Save you $300 on rear brakes,
and save you $700 on the steering rack.
We wont charge you $298 sales tax as the dealer will, but we will have about $100 is shipping fees.

Total savings: $2148

Thanks for the information -- I'll be sure to contact JonB when I order the parts. I think I'll wait til after the winter season is over....looks like my car will still be good until it get garaged for the winter.
