i have read ALL the posts i could on the bolt problem with our cars but no pictures of the actual bolt on the car. i would like to check the bolt to make sure its tight at 250 ft.lbs. like you all state but i am not sure what to check. i look at the crankshaft pully and the center of the pully is threaded but no nut on it that i can see? am i looking in the right area? if you dont have pics tell me exactly what to look for. does the drivebelt and crankshaft pully need to be taken off to check this bolt? and nervous using the nitrous again till i check it or pin it like you all suggest!

The problems can occur if you have a blower on your Viper, as long as you go the NA way...no problemo.

V10,

You are correct. It is a problem on A LOT of cars. Most of them are 2000 or newer. Many NA cars have lost their balancer with the nut coming loose.

The spec is 250 ft pounds. I hope you ate your Wheaties before you try it. That is a very tight bolt. You will need the car in gear, e brake on, and a strong foot on the brake. Then tighten the bolt.

I will send you pictures. The bolt is in the center and you should see it from the front.

Just to add my 2 cents, when I got my car (1994 gen 1) approximately 3 years ago being the curious individual I am, I reached down and tried to turn the bolt by hand and was amazed that it was easy to turn. I assumed as many others that the crank had a key for the pulley so I simply tightened it with the biggest friggin wrench I had. I have since keyed the crank with Sean's tool and feel much better about it.

I guess my point is that it is not a gen specific, blower specific, nitrous specific or any other contitional problem. Its a viper problem and if you own one you should do yourself a big favor and have it torqued, or even better key it.

An ounce of prevention.

I think you're looking at the water pump pulley. Check the center of the big pulley below that one :)
