Crushed by a supra !!!!

I recently put a response on the board in which I expressed my disappointment with my viper, and expressed the desire to get another supra. Well, even though It looks as though I'm still selling my viper, I realized something this week. I took the car out for a drive (rare thing). Got stuck in bumper to bumper traffic for an hour. that hour I felt like a star. Sometimes it amazes me the stares and comments I get. (viper is done up with hennessey body kit, hre rims and very low to ground - it sticks out!) Point is, I never got that in my supra (to that extent) and never will. Matter of fact, yesterday I saw a yellow supra all done up. I think it was god talking to me. It just didn't have that gawk factor like the viper. I still love that turbo power, but can't beat that viper style.

One thing is for certain, both cars are great machines in there own way.

I also have a question. Was Gerald's car stock when this race took place or was it modified with supercharger?

Also, how much power is that supra making that it beat the hennessey TT?

Your thinking of two different Geralds, the Gerald that lost has a Hennessey 650R w/a NX 250 shot. He (well SW driving his car) ran a 9.9x @14x I believe, he is from Houston. The other Gerald is from Tampa?? That day that houstonT raced the Hennessey TT he made 904rwhp uncorrected and high 800 something corrected I believe, using a RPS T72 Single turbo and small NOS kit (75hp??) Hope that helps.

Gerald had a Venom 650R w/ a 200 shot of NOS (not 250) at that time. Peter had @ 900 to the ground when he beat the Venom 800 TT. Chime in if I'm wrong Pete.

Why are you selling btw. I was gonna pick up a 360 Modena last week but now Peter's got me racin again.

That color w/ your body kit is killer!! Have you had any problems with it or just ready for a change?

i drove both cars today. my friend has supra with 450rwhp. car felt really smooth and fast but man my viper just ripped it. he is getting single turbo soon so i'll race him again.

I've never seen a variety of car that needs to much tinkering to be fast, and requires such a perfect state of tune to put up a good number.

Tom, you proved a very important point... it's not who puts down the bigger dyno number, and it's not who can pull the quickest in a rollon, and it's not who has more tricks to play with their car before the lights go green, it's about who crosses the finish line first... and most BPU++--++-++!++~= Supras still don't hang with stock GTS Vipers, IMO. I've never seen a Supra BPU++--+=__++~!!! break out of the 12's.... not at my track anyways.


Your right, it's not all about the dyno "number"..

not really. To get a supra to push 600rwhp on pump fuel its gonna run close to 20,000$. To get a viper run 600rwhp on pump fuel is gonna run 20k or so aswell. The viper will produce much more torque than the supra aswell. To get a supra with 700rwhp on pump fuel its going to require, cams, ported head and thats gonna be another 5,000$ or so. To get a viper from 600rwhp - 700rwhp is gonna cost roughly 5,000$ aswell or put on a shot of nitrous.

The MKIV supra was imported from 1993.5 - 1998. There were roughly 7,000 supras here, only half of which are turbo and about half of them are auto and other half is 6 spd. So you can say there are ~3500 turbo supras. How many vipers are out there from 92-current?

They are very heavy cars and I must admit it is funny seeing a 1200hp supra and a 400hp supra both running the same numbers

There really is no problem with my car at all. Problem is with me. I've had the car almost 4 years. It's just time for a change. I think I'm going to wait a while to get something. I'm in no hurry to get another car that I have to worry where I park it.

Even though there are considerably less twin turbo Supras when compared to Vipers as seen here: http://www.mkiv.com/specifications/retail_sales/retail_sales.htm

How quick is the quickest stock motor, stock tranny Viper? I think it's a 9.7, but I might be off by a tenth +/-. The quickest stock motor Supra is 9.0 and it's also not using nitrous and somehow is using drag radials. The Supra AND the Viper both **** in the 1/4 mile when compared to other sports cars such as a Vette or Mustang. Nothing but the unbiased facts above as I currently own a Dodge, Chevy, and a Toyota. I've got my eye on a Mercedes.

I agree with you on the "Freeway Olympics", but if we did racing like on ESPN or TNT, we would be crashing our cars into each other ala NASCAR. That Supra wing on your Viper might get knocked off.

No Supra has a V6, and if you read Peter's (HoustonT) message earlier in this thread where he ran 137mph traps on a measly 18psi on pump gas you would know it takes considerably more than 600 crank?? hp to acheive that while pushing over 3550 pounds of car + a driver. 137mph is fast for any car on pump gas and no nitrous with stock heads and bottom end.

Sometimes I just feel like correcting people. I don't do it out of spite, but I just don't like people thinking the wrong thing.

I think that you have that number incorrect. Id say its more likely you will find a modified Supra running around than you would stock. Regardless if you are near a meet or just on the street. However the degree of modification will vary.

My .02 about this discussion.
Every Supra owner that I have come across seems to own and drive their car to "kill" others. It is as if a day out on the road is not a desired experience in and of itself. My personal experience with perhaps a half dozen in this area is always a "threat". They drive looking for the "kill" experience. If they're behind you (in moving traffic), they're tailgating and trying to pass you (dangerously). If you let them go buy, they slow down and start blocking to incite??? Don't any of you ("you" not actually directed at anyone) enjoy the use of your car...as in taking a drive? Yes we all like to compete on our private tracks, but not every time I'm out taking a drive. Actually, most of the time I prefer an open winding road to test the Viper and myself. I could care less to compete against some Supra. This is the point that I, IMHO, find the most disturbing/irritating. Gain the confidence to enjoy what you have. Make your own mark rather than having to have a Viper to make something of yourself/your car. Again, just my personal and unfortunate experience with Supras and their owners.

Are the production numbers for turbo supras just the newer rounded style or does that include the wedgy looking turbos (Gen I?) I see both on the street, the wedge shaped ones are hard to tell from a standard corolla. I raced one turbo of that style on the freeway. It was quicker than your average car but I blew by him pretty easily.

There was no video link posted here, but there is a link to another forum page. I assume you're refering to the 9 flat video there. That car is a stock engined, no nitrous, gas burning, stock 6 speed, stock rear end Supra using drag radials. No fiberglass. In fact, I've never heard of a fiberglass Supra. Even the 2 Supras running 8 flats [which are stripped] use the stock body. And the 7 second Tundra-powered Supra runs the stock body as well. So, in other words - you're wrong.

Also, concerning the caged comment, if your car ever ran quicker than a 12.0, you would know a roll cage is required by any drag strip - Supra or Viper. Most of the people who actually race their car (drag or road) on this forum have roll cages.

Oh and Hein... Yeah, I actualy HAVE had cars run faster than 12s. I also ran a full tube chassis car with 700hp on tap to work (those were interesting commutes in..) on many occasions. Never could get a race.. maybe it was the 18" meats out back... who knows

I never said anything bad about supras (in this post atleast), if anyone wants to drop 20K on mods, thats fine.

Point: With enough money, you can make anything fast. A supra is no different than any other modern car with decent potential. All about how much time and money you are willing to spend. Because I don't hang out with the supra crowd (which you obviously do), I wouldn't know it wasn't a glassed car, a shy over 2900lbs w/ skinnies up front... looked like a liftoff from the movie (but again, *** do I know).

But, you don't have to be a dick about it man. ripping on 17 year olds because they want a viper, and now this... little ray of sunshine aren't ya!?

All this sounds like apples & oranges to me. About 8 years ago when I was teaching auto tech, I had a student who bought a 68 Chevy Nova for about $600.00. It had a small block 350 engine in it...he wanted to know what parts to buy to make it faster. That was easy--he had almost no money. He traded some stuff for a pair of 461 heads. I picked out the mildest cam I could find (stock 3:07 gears and a 2-speed Powerglide and no high-stall converter). We put on a stock Q-Jet carb and HEI ignition. He bought a cheap set of headers, but that was about it for mods.

To make a long story short, I was hoping he could run mid 14's in the quarter mile. He came back from the drags & said it ran 11's. I asked him what he'd been smoking, but his friends backed him up. They said it nearly pulled the front wheels off the ground (he had 7" slicks) and ran high 11's. I just knew they were all pulling my gearshift--but he came back the next day with the et slips.

So...if quarter mile performance is all that matters, how about a car with a total investment of under 2K that runs 11.92? That has to be some kind of record. However...

The car was the worst rust bucket. The other instructor was cruel--said he could spray the car with Liquid Wrench and sqeegee the whole car into the sewer after it melts.

So...a Viper is far more than just acceleration or RWP. Much more than world-class styling & handling. It's a classic case of synergy--the total is more than the sum of its parts.

I think we're fortunate to have one of the very few vehicles ever produced that transcends what is otherwise just a fast car. How many things could truly be changed on one of these without diminishing their appeal in some way? This car hit the sweet spot dead center. It's the Bugatti Royale of the future, the Duesenberg, the Auburn Speedster. And they're here now. And they also happen to blow away every car on the planet in slalom tests, at least most every car under 200 grand.

I for one don't really care if someone can put a blower on their Yugo or give a Supra a shot of N20 and make it faster than mine. I could do that too, but mine is also a Viper. Hope that's not rubbing it in too much!

I got out of the street car/drag car combo.. screw that noise. One or the other. Now.. I'm all for 9 second drivers... wether it's a supra, camaro, GN, or viper.

I had a 95 TA that would netted me a 6.68 in the 1/8th. I drove that **** thing everywhere... unfortunately in my stupidity I took out the AC (DOH!) to fit the IC pipes in there (back when a centrifugal 4th F-body was still a newish concept, when ATI was developing the P600B series). Great car, deadly quick and handled great. Yeah, I'm sure if I gutted it and dropped in 10 more grand it would have dipped into the 9s.. but then your sacrificing the street car appeal.

I don't car what it is... going fast is A-OK in my book

Now... lets discuss the 72 datsun 240Z with a Buick 3.8T motor in it....
